Not for long!
Headlice need to feed on your scalp blood to survive! When they pierce the skin to drink their next meal of blood they cause an irritation that causes the itchiness and scratching.
They lay their eggs on the hair shafts usually at night, and its these eggs that are called 'nits'. The insect is a headlouse and the plural is 'lice'.
The headlouse cannot fly, but crawls from one head to another, usually affecting childrens close friends - that is those who are physically close! As hair grows at half an inch per month, when you find a 'nit' on a hair measure how far it is from the scalp, then you can calculate how long you have infested for eg nits found on the hair shafts at say 1 inch from then scalp tells you that you've been infested for 2 months!
Ask your pharmacist or GP about the best treatments.

Yes.they live on the oil from your sebaceous glands. Head live can be transferred from person to person by sharing brushes, comb, caps, pillows or anything that contacts the head.
If you are white and sharing the brush with a black person do not worry, head lice cannot infect most black people.

Hair brushes are perfect places for them to lay their eggs, which turns the brush into a nursery once the eggs hatch. You can soak the brush in chlorine bleach for a few hours and that should kill any eggs or lice.
