Is it possible to use the s-video connection to transfer videos from the video camera tapes to the laptop or to burn them straight to a disk? If so could you please tell me, specifically, how to do it?

Probably not - most graphics cards have s-video output only. Don't forget that s-video doesn't include the audio, so it's not a great way of capturing your footage.

It is possible but you have to have a video card with an S-video input. The S-video connector on most laptops is an output only. If that is the case with yours (and it most likely is) then you will not be able to capture video on to the laptop without a major upgrade.

Use the USB cable that came with the camera, but you'll need to install the CD. However I found a pic a little jerky this way, the easiest way is to play the camera into a PVR then drop this to DVD. Finally, you can buy a firewire card and plug it onto the PC relatively easily. Just don't buy it from the camera shop as they are expensive!

If the laptop has an S video socket then yes but don't forget thet you also have to use an audio cable as S video cables do not have audio. the best way is to use a mini USB cable which are freely available at pc world, currys, jessops etc.

the s-video connector on your laptop is an output to feed an external video monitor for viewing. it is not bi-directional, it does not intake video to the computer.

the other part of your question, can you go from s-video direct to disk that answer is also no. s-video is analog. it needs to first be digitized and then converted to a file storage format suitable for the disk.
