Why listen to someone that is making a profit off preaching?

Personally I think it's disgusting to make a money off of Christ's teachings.

I agree with you guys in that many of them have families to support and need money but too often these men and women expoit their congregation.

I would suggest that the clergymen only perform those activities that are essential for operating the church. Too often they do good things, but they are not essential. Other people can operate the youth groups and the socials. The pastor doesn't need to do it all.

My argument is that if the clergy stick to the essentials then they will have time to work and support their families. There are several churches that do this and operate successfully.

Mormons have no paid clergy, bishops and other authorities are chosen by inspiration.

And I agree with you, any christian that needs to be paid to preach is not a real christian.

Yes, my church has a paid pastor...

But preaching the word of Christ isn't the only thing pastors do.

Whenever there is an accident and someone is dying in the hospital... He is there.

Whenever a family is in crisis or needs help... He is there.

Whenever a community event needs scheduling... He is there.

I know this man personally, and he works well over fifty-five hours a week, not counting community events.

A good Preacher/ Minister will spend many long hours not only writing his sermon for Sunday morning and Sunday night and bible study on Wednesday night but he will also be at the hospital at 2am for you or anyone else if called. How often do you get phone calls from strangers asking questions or from the police asking if you can help this person out. Like I said a good Minister deserves every penny he gets.

How do you expect them to live, especially if they are a full time pastor. If they are working another job that can detract from serving their flock. Even Jesus ate and slept at other people's houses. Giving food and shelter is a form of payment.

Some clergy have families. Who will support them?

Jehovah's Witness do not have a paid clergy. Our world wide preaching work is supported by donations, even the brothers that make our literature do not get paid to make them. Its ALL volunteer work including the construction of our Kingdom Halls.

Shouldn't a person who gives 24/7 to pastoring a church be able to support their family? My pastor works 60-70 hours a week, doing everything from preaching, running programs, counselling, helping the elderly and indigent, to jump stsarting cars and unclogginf church toilets. He earns every penny he makes. I wish we could pay him more.

My pastor has no say in what he is paid and he has little say in how much he works. He has to be available when someone calls. If it's 3:00 in the morning and someone needs help he is there. It it is his anniversary and someone needs him- he goes.

My pastor sacrifices everything to the church. How can paying his family to live in poverty be bad?

It is God who ordained it. Do you think they should go hungry and live under a bridge some where.

1 Cor 9:13 "Do you not know that those who perform sacred services eat the food of the temple, and those who attend regularly to the altar have their share from the altar? 14 So also the Lord directed those who proclaim the gospel to get their living from the gospel."

Yes, our pastor is supported by our parish. He makes about $25,000/year, plus living in the rectory. He buys his own car, insurance, and food.

I guess I don't see it as "making money off Christ's teachings," but as support for Christ's laborers. He is available to us around the clock, and shouldn't be concerned about the things of this world in order to do that.

I don't see his paltry income as "profiteering," but that's just me, I suppose.

My Son is a Minister in the Church of Jesus Christ. This is not LSD. The Ministry is unpaid. We also have feet washing , anointing with oil and laying on of hands. We have bread and wine for sacrament. And my favorite part of the meeting is testimony were we can stand and praise the Lord.

Priests only receive a small stipend, and many take vows of poverty depending on which order they belong to
