As a young child I was always inquisitive. I assumed because I was the eldest I would be the logically choice. So yes, I assumed she would select me...

I really couldn't know. I guess I'd save the one that's the closest to me. I'd try to save them all, even if it meant that in order to save even one more meant that I'd lose my life.

I try not to think of situations like these. You can think through them but never really know what you'd do until the time came.

The question is profoundly unfair and there are no good answers.

Let's first look at the purely hypothetical question and then attempt to consider an actual situation.

All decent parents would answer the hypothetical question similarly, that they would not choose one child over the other. Did you really expect your mother to pick one of you? if she did, that kid would have a superiority complex and the others would feel unloved. It would be cruel and heartless for her to actually give you a name. What you were really asking your mom is "Which of your children do you love more". Your mom gave you the only decent answer.

Now, in an actual situation, a parent's response would certainly be different. They would certainly not do nothing and let them all die, or jump off and die with them. In the real world, there are no absolutes like "only save one". There's no way to know that the other two kids would die while you save one, so the obvious solution is to rescue one first, then the others. Which one to rescue first depends on a thousand variables including their age, strength, climbing skills, what object they are clinging too, etc. Most parents would quickly guess which kid is about to fall first and save that one first.

I have a question for you. Why would you ask such a question? What truth were you hoping to reveal? Were you hoping she'd pick you, or assuming she wouldn't and just wanted her to admit it?

If I couldn't save both my children I would go over the cliff with them trying to save both of them. I would do my best to save both my children.

However, one can't fairly answer that question because it's one of those unanswerable ones a complete all roads lead to disaster question.

well first I would compose a series of questions ranging from easy to extremely hard.

the child who answers the most amount of questions would earn the right to live and go on to be president someday.

haha I kid.
how would it be impossible to save ALL of them?

I think no parent can answer this question. The truth is it is inconceivable to us. The only way you would ever know if for it to really happen. God forbid.
I can't think of anything worse.

I'd probably save the youngest. I'd then teach them the lesson:

If your older sibblings jumped off a cliff, would you follow them?

I would never have my 3 children dangling from a cliff....so I wouldnt have to worry about making a choice like that

saving one is not an issue. It's all and or die trying to save all!
