get a new (or second hand) ps2-it will be cheaper-trust me!!. because you can't just plonk another laser into the unit just like that-it does not work that way-these things need to be set-up to precise measurements.

turn the system upside down, it will work temporarily cause it brings the laser closer to the disc

ugh. that must stink. If I were you, I would call Sony, ask them how much it will cost, and how you can get a replacement, and work from there.
