Does the other girl even sing? Did Paula Abdul die and AI name her as a replacement? I don't think so. That kind of attack happens often between kids and your daughter should not take it personally or as if the girl knows what she's talking about.

The same thing happened to my friend's 12 yr-old daughter (who has sung with the power of a young Aretha Franklin since she was 6, has been on "Showtime at the Apollo", won local "Idol" contests, etc.), when HER friend said she couldn't sing. Luckily, she had some experience to the contrary. But the real contest came at a local weekly karaoke spot that we all attend. It was pretty easy to see who was talking out their...... The girl couldn't sing without having her posse sing along with her, much less solo. She eventually quit bragging at school that she was a better singer than my friend's daughter. I don't know if she was jealous, or deluded or what. Kids are just like that sometimes.

Back to your daughter. If she enjoys singing, nothing or no one should stop her. If you want to help her build up confidence in her abilities, consider singing lessons (helps everyone, even my friend's daughter) AND look for opportunities to perform. Singing teachers in our area recommend weekly local karaoke (it's like the "lab" part of a science class) because that's where you get to practice in public, it's always a very supportive environment, builds confidence - esp. when you get known as a singer among the other singers and strangers come over to pay compliments - and is a fun family event.

That confidence in her abilities will carry over to other areas and open new opportunities for her.

Good luck!!!! =)

Tell her that the other girl was just jealous, because she likely can't sing her way out of a wet paper bag...and we all know how easily wet paper tears. :D

You can also tell her that that type of shallow idiot never feels good unless (s)he is ruining someone's day, so the more she sulks and lets the nothing's opinion make her hide from the world, the more the nothing wins.

Tell her to put her and the other girl's voice to the test at school (make sure she practices).
