If your boss comes to you and says "I've chosen you to do this", are they giving you a choice? Are they asking for your consent?

I ask this because, in my last question, I was told that Mary was given a choice before she became pregnant with Jesus, and told me to look at Luke. Well, Luke will follow . . .

Luke 1
26In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."
29Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

34"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"

35The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[

oops, cut it off, here's the rest:
35The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[c] the Son of God. 36Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37For nothing is impossible with God."

38"I am the Lord's servant," Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her.

Hmmm, is it possible that what he's chosen me for is a great honor, one that my people (sorry, my co-workers) have been awaiting for a loooong time? But there will be hardship involved, too? And that if I undertake this honor, hardship and all, generations of co-workers down through time will remember me and...

Okay, real answer--it would depend on the boss. From what I know of my boss's history, if I said no he would find someone else. But I'd want to do it, because it would be an honor for me and my people, and I love my boss.

Edit--I see your addition; glad you put it there, or people would think I had a crazy answer! :)

neither.

your boss can tell you what to do. that is why that person is your boss. unless it is illegal, immoral, or unethical you are obligated to do as told. employment isn't a right, it is a privlege. if you don't like what you are asked or told to do, find another job.

sounds harsh, i know, but as someone who has owned a business, i didn't have time for negotiation or input. if i told an employee to do something, i had my reasons. if they couldn't trust that, then they could leave my employment.

Mary answered. "May it be to me as you have said." Then the angel left her.

She said yes, plain and simple.

Oh she had a choice as we all do. We deny God's will for us all the time. We have all said 'No' to God at one time or another.

sure they are, my boss doesn't demand things of me but maintains his position as a gentlemen when he asks me to do things, even if he signs my paycheck.

*edit* oh, i didn't know this correlated to Mary, in that case she had a choice to accept carrying the child to term or killing it by ingesting poison or after birth
