Killing is killing there is no CLEAN way to do it to make yourself feel better. If you do not want to kill this animal and it is a small animal. Go to Home Depot or Lowes and get a Have a hart trap. Set it out and bait it and check it every 3 to 6 hours. Once you caught the animal you want caught either call animal control or take it to the woods far away from your house and let it go.
You cold always just hid in a tree and wait for one to come under you and then jump out of the tree and put it is a rear naked choke untill it dies from lack of o2 to the brain. about 4 to 5 mintues. That is going to be one hell of a ride though. I would bring some friends with camera to video it.
Many states and counties do not allow poising of wild animals. This is nondiscriminat killing and you can kill the neighbors dog or cat or even kids. I would not ever try this. Plus would you rather be shot once or die from bleeding out your anus? I will take shot over bleeding anus any day of the week.

I raise rabbits for food and kill them quickly by a sharp blow to the base of the skull where it meets the spine. I calm it by running my open hand across the head and along its back, then like a karate chop I hit it right at the back of the neck at the base of the skull. Now I have done this for decades and I can kill it with one blow. However if you have never done this before, a metal bar like a tire iron will do the job, hitting it in the place I mentioned.
For big animals like cattle and hogs a 8 lb sludge hammer swung hard on their fore head drops them and since their heart is still beating for a few, you can slit their throat after the blow and hang them to bleed out.
I use a gun on large animals these days and some times use a .22 on small livestock. But the methods I described above is how my grandfather taught me to dispatch farm animals on his farm. And I still use those methods some times.
No way around killing being a bit messy. But you can make sure the animals will not suffer. And that is the most important part of it all to me; a humane death.

a "dead fall" type trap isn't messy, but it can still let an animal suffer. Hunting animals is much less "cruel" than letting them starve due to over grazing, or die off from illness. A correctly placed shot, from a true hunter, will kill an animal very quickly without suffering. Traps are in -humane, but then again, eating beef from the store that was killed by stunning it with a blow to the back of the skull and starting the butchering process while it is still alive is more so. Sorry to step off the subject, but thought it needed to be brought up. No real hunter would ever allow an animal to suffer needlessly. That's why we spend so many hours making certain our rifle or handgun is accurate, that we can place a shot into an animal that will kill it very quickly, and we don't take shots that might wound an animal, instead letting that animal go and waiting for a better shot.

Killing is inherently messy.
I'm sorry, but it's the truth!
Hunting with a gun is not a particularly violent action.
And any hunting mess is less, than say, combat, or a gladiatorial fight.
If you want to take the life of an animal then be prepared for the loss of blood, and some gore.
It is the same as what happens in any slaughter house, or chicken farm, or any other "civilized" means of harvesting meat.
In my opinion shooting game is one of the most humane means of taking meat.
Being a carnivore requires the taking of life, whether or not you are personally, psychologically, or physically capable of doing the deed, it does not change the necessity of slaughter and death to fuel the human need for protein.
Hunting is if anything, a lot more natural then buying processed meat in the deli.

Well you can scare them half to death and put them in a pen and give them lethal injection.
But come on now the only way to really make it fast is with the right kind of bullet.
By the way I have been shot. And believe it or not I didn’t realize I had been shot until my friend pointed to the blood coming from my leg. I just felt like something tapped my leg. It was a .38 special round that some fool shot at a rock next to me and it glanced of the rock and into my leg.
For a few minutes I was of course in shock and it didn’t hurt much. But about 30 minutes later it hurt like hell!
So if Mr deer gets hit with a 30-30 or .44 magnum in the right place he doesn’t know what hit him. He is dead before his brain knows what’s going on.
As for mr cow he sees the cow in front of him get a steel rod run into its brain and can hear it bellowing in agony so he knows dam well what’s in store for him! And that cow may be still alive while the gut it and skin it.
So with out a doubt hunting is more humane with a gun. A bow can do this as well with a well placed shot.

Why not snare some rabbits? They are delicious, and a good intro to hunting and cleaning wild game. Email me if you want some pointers tips.
Also, you should try shooting a gun, you could learn to like it. Myself, I only like guns for hunting, I'm not a gun nut or anything, just a hunter. Maybe start with a pellet gun even, I use my pellet gun for ruffed grouse. I also use a slingshot.

a gun or something like a sledge hammer is the only way to kill it instantly with no suffering. if you shoot it with an arrow in the heart it will still take a couple of minutes to bleed to death internally. if you miss the heart even a little bit it may take days to die.
personally I would much rather be killed with a gun shot to the head than be shot with an arrow, wouldnt you?

It would help quite a bit if I knew what kind of animal you were wanting to kill. I'd use different tactics to kill a mouse compared to the ones I use when I kill a bear. Gimme some info!
Addition: I have some eerie feeling like you want to do something illegal.........I sure hope not.

The only non-messy way I can think of to kill a animal would be by suffocation.
Killing them with a rifle is the fastest and most humane but hunting with a bow is a bit less messy.
The most mess and dangerous way I have killed a animal without a gun would be killing wild boar with spears.

Great question...AC-DC had a great song called TNT ... lot's of ways:)...
Now seriously...
You want to kill something and it not be messy?
Question? do you intend to eat it?
If so...Gutting is pretty messy no matter how it dies!
I think a supermarket is YOUR best bet for food.
All those mentioning Archery must never have killed with a bow! It can be very "messy"
