Socrates said it best.
There are two possibilities after death.
One, there is an afterlife.
Two, there is no afterlife. This would be analogous to sleeping completely undisturbed. No dreams, nothing. The nights that I slept like this are some of the best nights I can remember. If that is death, I embrace it readily.

Yeah we live, we reproduce and we die.. thats how it goes. It's not about individual life it's about collective life. All we are is part of the continuation of our species. If every human that ever lived never died this world would have been overpopulated and destroyed long ago. Population is controlled by mortality without it no species can continue to perpetuate itself with a finite amount of resources. There is only so much habitat, food and mates available.. its kinda like a hotel sombody has to check out to make room for more to check in. In effect the point of life is to make new life and then check out to make room for the next generation. What is there to hope for? well I hope to make the most of my time here before I have to check out..
PS it's not me who claims "poof we're here" that is the claim of creationists.. I claim that I do not know how we got here to begin with but that it took a long time to get to where we are now.. I know how humanity came about but I am still searching for the answer to how that whole process was started. I am still asking questions instead of accepting the first comforting explanation to come along.

That's why "unbelievers" (that's hilarious by the way) live for today. We live for life and all the wonderful and beautiful things this world has to offer us. I'm sorry that your life is so empty and dull that you need to believe that there is something better out there but I believe that this is as good as it gets and we have to make the most of it.
The best thing about dying is that it's a beautiful part of life. Atoms cannot be created nor destroyed therefor when I'm dead my atoms will be redistributed and go into a new part of life. The circle of life really is amazing and beautiful.

hope for what?
to attempt to say that there is life after death just because the feeble human mind can't accept the fact that when you die, there is no more consciousness? that's what most of religion is about, the fact that humans can't perceive that: the end of consciousness, so they make up an after life in order to make themselves feel better.
and with this afterlife, comes the smart people who said "hey, if we made some rules up that will control people, and make them act a certain way in order to get a better after life, we can control the masses"
and then Christianity was born...

i cant explain it, and i dont care to. It really doesnt matter that much. Why concentrate on where we came from, and where we go when we die, when today, i have life, and today, i can make something out of my life. today i can love someone, today i can be a friend, today i can contribute to society, today i can have fun. Why does the past matter, it happened already, we may never understand why, so whats the point in worrying about it. The future, no one knows because you cant die and live to tell about. WHy waste my one certain thing, life, worrying about the beginning, and the end.
maybe you should get a life, it might be more benificial than worrying about the past and the future.

The Big Bang theory I guess is your "poof" we're here and the fact that we're killing ourselves by ruining the environment is your "poof" we're gone. I don't even think God could reverse what we're doing to ourselves since he gave us free will.

You keep hearing folks go on and on about "having hope"...
Hope for what?
The scientific facts are these: you are conceived, you are born, you live your lifespan, you die. In some cases the life cycle is a high quality, comfortable one, and in other cases it's a miserable one. However, the facts remain unchanged: you are born, you live, you die.
End of conversation.

What hope? You mean a 'reward' for life?
PS I don't subscribe to the magic 'poof you're here' theory.
That is the religous forebear to evolution.
Magic (anthropically biased) Sky Daddy says "here be a person"
'pooof!'
Er, really?

Actually the idea of "poof we're here" is a Christian fairy tale.
I'm sorry that the truth is not comforting to you, but that is not a prerequisite to making it true.
