Various disciplines of studies deal with world religions both from a historical and a philosophical viewpoint. The question becomes: Does any religion help or hinder society?

From my viewpoint, Islam has consistently shown that it influences it's societies' rules to be very repressive. Christianity is also repressive but not as repressive as Islam, but has the potential to be so. I have not seen enough of other religions' effects on societies to comment on them.

Diversity and tolerance are fine and you should be free to practice your religion, however your religion should not be the basis for laws or what is taught as facts.

well i am not an atheist but still would like to answer.
religion did not invent the atom bomb or the nukes or the "mad" ness that is prevailing.

religion did not invent pollution, green house effects, co2, ozone hole and now space pollution

scientific discovery or the after effects of a particular discovery did.

so my question to GFY and Skeptic, time to throw non sensical science into dust bin.

as far as your original question goes, i agree with you.

I agree that we should all celebrate diversity, but I also think everyone needs to find it in themselves to seek a "common ground" in dealings with those whose beliefs or lack of are different and accept that just because someone doesn't hold the same beliefs doesn't make them a bad person by comparison....

I answered it also and I agree with GFY that we should not tolerate the bad things that come from religion (that, unfortunately I believe is most of religion). We can get all of the good stuff it offers without believing in nonsense.

I think you've made a very good point. We study historical religions to learn about historic cultures. Why can't we study religion NOW, to learn about modern cultures in various societies. There's no harm in it.

I think that people should certainly use their intellect when approaching all things in life. I am okay with people believing in different things. I am not okay with people carrying out atrocities in the name of their beliefs.

Use whatever you need to get you through life... but don't impose it on others. Pretty simple.
