It may be possible for you to check in earlier than 3pm so stop at the hotel and see. If not, they may be able to hold your luggage for you so that you can get out and explore.

Well, 9 a.m. is when the wheels hit the ground. Then there's all the baloney you have to endure to get off the plane, walk to the baggage claim, wait for your luggage, etc. Then it takes time to find transportation into the city. So it'll probably be around 11:00 or so, assuming the hotel is in the city (and I sincerely hope it is). If the hotel can't give you a room early (and I know from working at hotels that if a room is available, they'll let you check in early), they will almost certainly hold your bags for you while you explore the city.

Call the hotel today and ask if you can check in early. Most hotels don't have a problem with that as long as you give them enough notice (24-48 hours).
If it's not possible to check in early, nearly every hotel will hold your luggage for you in a secure area until your room is available.

You can drop the luggage at the hotel, they will hold it for you until check in. Then go to Times Square and get something to eat. It is the the best place to go for a few hours to see the most stuff. It's not very "in depth" so it can be done rather easily, but its full of cool stores, great restaurants, and interesting people, so it's a good way to blow off a few hours!

The hotel can hold your luggage for you (usually at the bellhop desk) or you might be able to check in early. I have the same thing coming up this Wednesday and will be calling my hotel Tuesday to ask if I can check in early or request early check in. But they will hold my luggage. Just be sure to tip them for holding it. Though I don't know if you tip before or after as someone different could be there later on.

I would recommend going to the hotel and checking the bags with the porter. That way, you can come straight to the hotel after some sight seeing. While at the hotel, you could check with the front desk to see if early check in is possible.
Enjoy the trip.

most hotels have a holding area or lockers for luggage. and sometimes they might let yu check in early. i've never had a problem with it. How are you getting to the city ? i've gone on the van that takes many people to many different hotels and it seems like it's cheaper.

First, if its LGA, the ETA is more aspirational than a prediction of actual time. When you arrive, go directly to the hotel. They may let you check in early if the room is available; if not they'll almost certainly let you leave your baggage. They may even let you check in early if the room is NOT available & let you come back for the key that evening. This happens all the time.

Call the hotel tonight and ask about early check in. Sometimes, if the room is ready, they'll let you check in to avoid the mad rush at 3pm. They probably won't guarantee it until you show up. While you have them on the phone, ask if they can store your bags until you can check in. Most hotels will do this.

I run into this all the time. Usually I go to the hotel and leave my baggage with them, then I use the time to explore the area around the hotel I've made some great discoveries
