To me photography is the perfect intersection of art and science. Lots of things you think are exciting are probably boring to other people. Good thing there is "something for everyone."

Take a look at the first 4 pictures in the link below, each tells a story or invoke an emotion, that's what photographers like to do - tell a story with a picture or stir up feelings, create an image that is pleasing or challenging or inspiring to look at. Then there are the technical challenges that I won't bore you with. It's not for every one and not everyone appreciates photography. Not everyone like golf or cooking etc...it comes from within.

Why are some people into painting landscapes? They're just reproducing what they see out in nature but not as accurately...
The point is that photography is art AND science. There's the art of framing a shot, getting your subject or model to look interesting or attractive, or unattractive, or whatever, and lighting to set moods, create motions, and provide an emotional response. And there's the science of getting the camera to work right with the right exposure and, if people still do it, developing the pictures using chemicals to get the desired look.

Photography allows me to document and record important events in my family's life and in nature and the world around me.
I have photographs taken years ago when my children were young. Now I'm taking photos of my grandchildren.
I have photos of my mom and dad, now long deceased.
I have photos of areas that once were farmland and are now subdivisions.
I have photos of an old barn that only a few weeks later was destroyed in a tornado.
One of my joys is being out early in the morning to photograph the dawn and then watch as the light changes during the day and how it changes the scene.
I can't understand why some people would sit and play video games or watch soap operas...

I don't enjoy taking pictures of people because I am shy, but I do like taking pictures of animals. Photographers like to capture the emotion of an event or person. It all depends on what the photographer likes.

For the same reason they are into anything else that interests them.
You could approach your question from a variety of different standpoints : psychological, artistic, documentary, ethnographic, voyeuristic, surveillance etc.
If this question really interests you why don't who make a purposeful study of why people take photographs. You wouldn't be the first and all work in this direction is valuable.

I take pictures of stuff I like in real life. Later on, when I can't see it in real life (being too far away or something) I can at least look at the photograph. It like keeping a historical archive.

Because everyone is different - some people are detail oriented, others are imaginative... some are visual thinkers, others use words.
If you can first appreciate a really good photograph then you might like to make one just as good yourself... then it becomes a little addictive, 'cos it's then a challenge!

Because I find it fun and relaxing. I take photos of wildlife & landscape. Not muchin the way of people. Plus I think is good to have photos to remind you of where you've been & the good times you had.
