It is not rude to accept a reward, however it would be much more commendable to ask the gift-giver to instead donate the reward to a charity of your choosing. If there is a charity in some way related to your heroic deed, that would be a perfect option.

If I chose to help someone in need, it would be from a sense of responsibility, not for the reward. I wouldn't feel comfortable taking money after that. I'd try my best to refuse the reward, and convince them that their thanks is enough.
I suppose it depends on the situation, though. For example, if I found a briefcase full of money, and the owner offered me a small reward for its return, I would accept it. But if I was returning someone's beloved lost pet, I could never accept a reward for that.

You should not expect or accept the award. Rather, suggest he make a donation to a charity in your name.

If I saved a life, let's just say, Donald Trump, and he decides to "reward" me with $1,000,000 or stocks in his corporation,
would you think that I would turn it down? heck, NO!!!!

I would politely decline the money and just say that the fact they were well is thanks enough.
