Dry firing (shooting without ammo) is bad for any air gun. That is why the owners manual for any air gun says not to do it or you will damage the gun. BTW dry firing is also bad for any rimfire gun and most break action shotguns. Doesn't hurt centerfire rifles or handguns.

RE:
Does it hurt a 'Break Barrel' BB gun to blank shoot it?
I have a Crossman 100 FPS Break Barrel BB Gun and I was wondering if it hurts it to shoot it without ammo? cause it makes a really big bang when I do it and it's cool but I don't want to damage it. Thanks!

Don't dry fire any pellet gun. If you really want to destroy a break barrel, pull the trigger with the barrel "broke" it will snap back and probably hurt you, definitely ruin the gun.
For a really big bang, get a blank gun.

Yes. - A 'break barrel` gun is a springer.
The gun is designed to operate with the
resistance of a pellet in the barrel.
Dry firing lets the piston slam home too hard
and will eventually damage the gun.

Its not bad if done once in a while but I would not go out and play cowboys and Indians with it. Might find yourself with a air gun that doesn't work. Its hard on the mechanical aspects of it.
I'm a cowboy. Called it!

It is never a very good to dry fire anything on a regular basis, but it won't like destroy the gun within 2 shots.

a little because the piston SLAMS right into the back of the commpresion chamber ..
whereas if you had a bullet a lilttle bit of the air pressuse would stop the piston from hitting the walls of the compression chamber.
Over time it WILL slow down the fps rate & also damage the seals.

I heard that WD40 or some kind of oil will make smoke. Maybe it was diesel or kerosene? Experiment until you get the right effect. Wear safety glasses, by the way.

It's probably not the best thing for it, but its not going to change the rifle dramatically.

hi there
yes it will hurt it , over time every thing will start to loosen from the slam of the piston into the exit wall, it needs that cushion of air there as when you have a pellet in the chamber.
