I wondered if anyone out there could clarify why the PS3 60 gb version was withdrawn from the UK I went into two high street stores and got two different answers?
1. That there was an issue with them not beong able to play the PS2 and PS1 games as stated.
and my second answer was
2. Sony weren't selling them in such high quantities so deleted them, which I find hard to believe?.
Also I notice that they are selling on ebay for well over £400.00 when they were deleted they were going for £350.00 with 2 games included
Help appreciated

Apparently reading around the Net this evening It costs Sony more to make the 60 gb than they are selling them for, I presume therefore they must have cut their losses and stopped selling it rather than lose money!

Apparently Sales werent What Sony Was Expecting And It Was Found That This Was Due To The High Price Tag. So, To Cut Costs, They Put In A Lower Capacity Hard Drive, Removed The Media Card Readers, Removed Backwards Compatibility And From What I Seen IN PC World, The Chrome Trim.

It's more or less reason #1. The UK 60 gb uses software emulation for PS2 games, and I think it's probably becoming a huge chore for the programmers to write the programs to play PS2 games. So Sony is getting rid of the 60 gb and just concentrate on the 40 gb, which cannot play PS2 games.
The other reason might be related to the US 60 gb version. The US 60 gb version has been discontinued because of the emotion engine. The emotion engine is expensive, and if Sony continues to use the emotion engine on the PS3, Sony wouldn't be able to offer the PS3 at 500 bucks, so Sony discontinued it. Since the 60 gb is discontinued in the US, Sony probably did it to the UK in order to make things run more smoothly. Instead of having 60 gb hard drives lying around just for the UK, Sony got rid of it. Now Sony only have 40 and 80 gb hard drives lying around instead of 40, 60, and 80 gb hard drives.

He's asking about the UK 60 gb version, not the US 60 gb version. The UK version uses software emulation while the US version uses hardware emulation.

PAL 60GB uses a software emulation of PS2's CPU, but it still has a GPU from PS2 (unlike 40GB). That chip (it's called Graphics Synthesizer) costs money, as well as it's installation. Sony sells consoles now for the price, that is less, than it's production cost. Sony does it, because the sales of games will easely cover those losses (it was done with PS2 in the beginning too). That's why 60GB is discontinued.

Sony issued a statement in October that they have discontinued production of the PS3 60GB model due to "consumer feedback", and the aim was to lower production costs & the retail price with the 40GB PlayStation 3 model. It's basically the same as the 60GB - the main thing missing is backwards capabilities with PS2 games
Sony PlayStation 3 40GB package includes: console, wireless SIXAXIS controller, AV Scart Connector, AV & USB cables. You can currently buy the PS3 40GB online with a free HMDI cable for £279.99 (or get it with your choice of game or an extra controller for £299.99)

sony's explanation for the 60 gig unit being discontinued was "customer feedback"-a load of old tosh IMHO. the 60 gig model is without doubt the best ps3 out there (bearing in mind the 80 gig unit has exactly the same specs-but you are paying extra for HDD capacity you won't need anyway). so it seems sony has shot themselves in the foot because the 40 gig unit is only a shadow of its bigger brother. if you can locate one-grab it because it is becoming an extrememly rare and much sought after peice of kit. and as for the 20 gig model-i don't even know why sony bothered!!!. mine plays ps2 games as well-straight out of the box-no downloads needed. (i have just discovered this thanks to the poster above).

1 rubbish, 2 sort of
people wernt buying them because they said they were too expensive (true) but as they are a no profit item and they make theyre cash on games they reduced the spec including taking away ps2/1 compatibility
I have one and it plays any game i stick in it
theyre going for more now because people now want ps2 compatibility
either sony lied about what people said and just wanted to sell a knocked down version or people are dumbasses

Sony stopped doing the 60GB version and started doing a 40GB one to reduce costs. Most analysts thought that the PS3 cost was too high and so they had to find ways to reduce the price
