If you catch it soon enough, you can try a System Restore to an earlier Restore Point.

I'm not sure which "original CD" you tried to use. But if you run the Win XP setup from the CD, about one-third of the way through it will ask you if you want to Repair windows. Choose this option and it won't re-install completely.

Another way is to check on another computer for the missing files; a friend would be glad to help.

Fortunately windows as a solution for this.
Restart your computer with the windows CD. Boot from your CD.
The first screen will ask u about fresh installation or repair of windows.
Just go for the repair of installaton, it will put your system32 files back on your computer.
But if the virus is still on your computer then there is no point in doing the above step.Instead go for fresh installation

Try the Windows repair utility. It's on the installation CD. If that fails, copy your important files to external storage and reinstall.

you are not able to do a reinstallation with out the cd installer. after you have a cd installer, you'll be able to reformat the tough disk and reinstall afterwards. home windows install will supply you this alternative on the starting of the approach.
