Depends completely on your boss and the style of management at your company.
Basically the skillset you displayed is initiative, whilst many companies encourage this it sounds like one of the following:
a) your boss subconciously doesn't want you to succeed or look better than them for fear of their own position
b) what you did is expected from you anyway and you only did something of marginal value
c) your company doesn't enourage initiative (this is often the case with public services)
d) what you did actually didn't help at all
In any case, it's not worth dwelling on these things but wait until the appropriate time to solicit general feedback i.e. an appraisal.

Look at it this way, if you did an extra task that he didn't ask you to, it can't hurt, and you don't need or get feedback for everything you do at work. It's like when kids do something bad we parents can remember that (forever) he/she will make a mental note of it, and no I don't think it makes you look like you are trying to hard, it shows that you are dedicated, and promotion material. You take initiative...you are dedicated and responsible and a hard worker.

well it's being proactive
but don't expect a big pat on the back your at work!
just doing what you should do with out being told will makes you more of a leader and when it's time for a raise or promotion with this proactive outlook you may just be next in line!
however if you sit like a little puppy waiting for someone to say good job then your just looking for complements and that's not really the point of being proactive that's more along the lines of a brown noser!

That depends upon the task, is it something spectacular, will it help you do your job better, is it something that is going to make a big difference? Good effort, no matter what it is will always be rewarded, even if it goes unsaid. Do the extra for yourself, not just to receive praise. Go the extra mile and you'll go far, who cares if you boss praises you or not.

Depends on what it is, really. If it's increasing the efficiency of your boss or department, I'm sure it'd be fine (as long as you're not violating a rule). If it's picking up his dry cleaning, that would be a different story.

I usually do things that are not asked of me because I actually like my job. Fortunately I'm always appreciated for these small tasks and that motivates me to do more. However, if you haven't received any feedback that does not mean that you are not appreciated. If you felt good doing what little task you did, keep on doing it.
