I signed up for the Air Force about a month ago. I picked 4 jobs when I was at the MEPS. My recruiter told me that one of those jobs would be guaranteed. After much research, there's one job that really catches my attention. I'm not really interested in the other ones. I told my recruiter that I liked this specific job, which happened to be one my 4, but he said that there's a 25% chance of getting that job. I might get it.
Is there any way I can have that job guaranteed for me? can my recruiter guaranteed that job? I don't want to end up doing something I'm not interested. My recruiter told me that once in Basic Training, I could talk to the Air Force counselors and try to change the job, which I think is BS, or cross train after 3 years in my job. I have 2 or 3 days to go and sign those papers.
Thanks for the advise

Yes, you can and SHOULD get a guaranteed job!! They will try and steer you towards going "open", because they can fill their goals easier that way. Stand fast, and hold your ground. Talking to a counselor at Lackland is a part of Basic, BUT, they can't change your job for you!! They only brief you on what your job will entail, length of Tech School, where it's at, etc. And, as far as cross training at the time of re-enlistment, he's kind of doing a snow job on you. What they don't tell you is you can only cross train from a career field with an "overage" to one with a "critical shortage". Now, sometimes going into a career field blind can be a good thing. Don't sell yourself short on certain jobs either. There are a ton out there that may not sound good, but when you actually get in them, they are pretty awesome. But, if I had to do it all over again, I would have held out for a guaranteed job, that's for sure!! And please, don't listen to any of these people who say they know what they're talking about, and they aren't even in the AF!!

No your recruiter cannot guarentee you a job.

MEPS can guarentee you a job.

The Air Force only gives MEPS, 40% of the jobs in the Air Force to assign.

The other 60% are reserved to be assigned during basic training, for those who enlisted under an Open Field.

You can refuse to sign the papers at MEPS, if they do not give you the exact job yoiu want.

But you can pretty much forget about enlisting in the USAF for atleast 6 months, if you do refuse a job and walk away.

The AF isn't like the other services, they have more people wanting to join, than they can actually enlist.

So they don't take threats, they will just tell you to take a walk.

So you have a choice, you can accept any of the four jobs offered and enlist,

Or go enlist in another branch.

The Army, Navy or Marines would love to have you.

.
Yes, you can try and change your job in basic training, chances are slim that will happen, unless the job you want to change into, is having a hard time finding enough people.

Cross training at your first reenlistment is possible.

But the rules are constantly changing.

At one time, everyone in the AF was allowed to cross train at thier first reenlistment, regardless of manning in thier field, or the field, they wanted to cross train into.

Now they don't do that anymore. In some critical fields, no one is allowed to cross train at all.

In other fields, you can only cross train into fields with shortages.

So exactly what the rules will be in 3 years, no one can tell you.

You're only in DEP now, so you aren't signed up. What you did was fill out a wish list of 4 jobs for the guys at MEPS to try and reserve for you on the system. What's open or closed changes hourly. When you go down to MEPS on ship day, they will have one of those reserved and on a contract for you to sign, that and swearing in agian will put you in the military.

If it doesn't say what you want, you are not required to sign that contract. You can tell your recruiter you do want to be in the Air Force, but this is the job you want, and if he can't get it for you then you may not be willing to sign your contract & may instead choose to reschedule your ship date till you can get it. Be diplomatic about it, but what it'll do is cause him to work with the counselors at MEPS to look for that specific job rather than the other three options. You still may not be able to get what you want, but if you put some pressure on them they'll do their best to help you out.

That is the same lie my recruiter told me, which is why I ended up dropping out of the DEP program. Most likely you will end up with a guarenteed aptitude area, and will get to pick an available job in that area. You will get a call from your recruiter telling you whether you got a job you picked or the aptitude area that you picked. And once you get to Basic, if you didn't get the job you want... good luck trying to change it. I would wait till you know what job you will before I signed anything. put pressure on them, because they sure will put it on you!

cross training is a Joke, you can only Crosstrain into jobs that have a MASSIVE need for people.

IF MEPS guarantees the job you will more then Likely get it. I went in Guaranteed and got my Job. Remember if it's not in Writing, IT'S BS.

no, the recruiter has nothing to do with it. Only the AF version of a Classifier(Navy term) can guarantee you a job.

The AF does do things differently.. you are guaranteed training in a specific FIELD..NOT a specific JOB. They can guarantee you will be given mechanical training, but not jet engine mechanical training.

Ask your recruiter to put it in writing because "if it's not in writing, it didn't happen." Without that there are no guarantees.

the only branch of service that can guarantee a MOS is the army.

No, the recruiter can't guarantee you anything. They'll say just about anything to get you to join. Think used car salesmen. Good luck and thank you for serving our country, it is appreciated!!
