People often disparage Melbourne's weather for no reason. As far as rainfall is concerned, Melbourne has a median rainfall of 646mm on 146days. The Gold Coast has more than twice as much with 1393mm on 153 days. Melbourne is colder in the winter than the Gold Coast but that gives you a chance to wear some winter clothing. Melbourne is much bigger than the GC with far more to do. It has great restaurants, theatre, shops, sporting venues. It has its tourists but it is not designed around tourism as the Gold Coast is. The GC is touristy and tacky with too many screaming kids and drunken teenagers.

As somewhere to live, Melbourne is one of the great cities of the world, you'll love it. The Gold Coast won't go away and you can always visit it for a few days - which is as long as any sane person would want to give it.

I live in northern NSW and am currently in Darwin so I have no axe to grind for either place but I have been to both many times and have lived in Melbourne.

1) Sydney is a dump. Unless you a rich you would have to live hours out of the city and commute everywhere. Crime is going through the roof in the western suburbs. It seems like every week someone is getting shot out there. 2) Nothern Territory is REALLY hot, humid and full of crocodiles, snakes, spiders, sharks and all sorts of things. The locals are a bit rough around the edges too. It's a 'frontier' really so if you are prepared to live in a frontier than that's fine 3) Melbourne is one of the world's most livable cities - but the weather can be cold, windy and rainy one day and very hot the next. I personally really like Melbourne. Melbourne is Australia's capital for fashion, shopping and entertainment. 4) Perth is a booming mining city but it's a bit strange. Trust me. My Grandmother is from Western Australia and some of my closest friends are and they agree with me. Perth is a big city with a small town attitude. 5) Brisbane is nice. It's got the best of both worlds - except we need better infrastructure otherwise we will turn into another Sydney. Brisbane has shopping and entertainment - but not to the extent of Melbourne. Our winters are mild, but summers can be quite hot and humid (not like Darwin and the Northern Territory). Don't think about North Queensland... See my notes on Darwin and NT.

I've lived in both places.
The Gold Coast wins hands down as somewhere to live.
Many people will probably give comments based on holidaying at the GC. It's entirely different to live in the suburbs away from the tourist strip.

I love Melbourne, but only for weekends away, cheap flights etc, but I'd never want to have to live there again. We go there a few times a year.

I'll start by saying i live in Melbourne, and yes id say Melbourne if it were me-bugger all rain (huge myth),does have a winter but its quite mild compared to winters around the world with probably average temp of 15-17 deg, more job prospects, more things to do,definately bigger with about 4 million people, great restaurants, bars etc

gold coast on the other hand, plenty of rain yes warmer on average but also has the humidity, rubbish restaurants, some good bars, great beach, real touristy and tacky-good for a holiday (although been there done that) but wouldn't want to live there.
