I posted a question yesterday that my dog had thrown up a large river rock. He continued to get sick so I took him to the vet and they found another rock in his small intestine and had to do surgery. Besides, getting rid of all the rocks in my yard, do you have any suggestions of how to keep him from eating them? Has anybody used a muzzle while their dogs are outside so they don't get into eating everything? He also likes to naw on the stucco on the side of the house which seems odd. Maybe he's lacking some minerals or vitamins?

You will have to watch him closely when he is outside. Get an electronic training collar and set it on medium. When he picks up a rock, give him a quick jolt. Don't say anything to him. He has to think the rock is causing the shock. If he doesn't react to the shock, turn it up a little higher until you see a reaction. If he over reacts, turn it down. It will take a while but he needs to associate the rock with an unpleasant sensation. If he is eating a quality food he shouldn't be lacking any vitamins or minerals. I suspect he is playing with the rocks and swallows them. Give him something else to play with and praise him when he does. Some people think shock collars are cruel and in the wrong hands they can be. In this case it is far less cruel than letting him eat rocks.

I used to have a dog that did this, I was forever taking him to the vets to get him "emptied" - not pleasant. The vet suggested feeding him bran in his food and liquid paraffin on a daily basis to sort out the small rock problems. whenever he was anywhere where he could get bigger ones he wore a muzzle.
It was a long time ago and I have no idea why he started it, the vet never said anything about dietary deficiencies at the time.

We just saw a dog who was obsessed with rocks on Ceasar Milans show. He was completely insane......Ceasar had to take him to the center with other dogs and it took like 2 weeks or so to help him out.

What he did was slowly replace the rocks with toys.......and bc the dog was with other dogs who were not obsessing about rocks; the dog seemed to take notes and followed whatever the other dogs did. In case you need to go buy that particular show....I remember the dogs name was "Pumpkin"
