Does anyone here speak in tongues? If so, have you ever felt pressured to be moved by the spirit and "faked it"?
I've been reading a bunch of ex-Pentecostals on another forum and they are admitting to resorting to "Yabba dabba doo" and whateber that peewee herman phrase was (meeka leeka hidey ho or something) as children to make people think they were moved by the spirit. One person (the one who used the peewee herman thing) said that she was locked in a room all the girls from the church and told to invite the spirit in and try to speak in tongs. The person who locked them in said that if they weren't meved by the spirit now, they probably never would be so they would probably go to hell.
Another poster spoke of a woman who would give a 5-minute "lalalalalalalalala" every 2 weeks. (He suggested that maybe "la" meant badger in some ancient language and she was actually saying badgerbadgerbadger, which cracked me up, but that's not the pt.
Have you experienced anything similar?

Please don't make this about the validity of speaking in tongues. I really just want to know if anyone here has been coerced. Thanks. :-)

My family attended a pentecostal church for a few years, and although none of us spoke in tounges I witnessed a few who supposedly was. Most of it sounded like a bunch of gibberash to me, but there was one older guy there, and he actually was a guest speaker at a lot of other churches around the state, not just pentecostal, name the denomination, and he visited. Anyways one Sunday when the preacher was up at the podium shouting a bunch of crap he stood up and raised his hands, and it was like everything just went quite and still, and he spoke. At first I though I was just cracking up, but than my brother elbowed me and he whispered. "Is it just me, or can you understand him too?"
What we were hearing, although he was speaking words we had never heard, was, "This is a false church, with false words spoken by a false man. Humans are weak and susceptible to be mislead, and you must look within yourself to find the true glory of the One who created the world, the void thereafter, and all of his children recogniozed, and those that are not. Forget that you are born as this, and look around you and draw your brothers and sisters to you for the love that is within you also is within me. That is my gift, but it is up to you to seek the truth for each of yourselves."
We were just sitting there staring at him our mouths agape, and afterwards, he cme up behind us, and said, "You know what you need to do."
That is when you both left that church, and although we are both christians we don't attend, but try to better the world by our actions, rather than to sit in a pew every Sunday. We help who we can help and try to see the best in people. Neither of us have forgotten that day.
About 6 months later the preacher was discovered to be having an affair with three other women, not including his wife, and he was swiping church funds. *LOL*

As a child, I was raised in a pentecostal church and heard many people speak in tongues. Yes, there are some out there who fake it as there are people in other churches who fake being a christian. Tongues are one of the 7 spiritual gifts given to certain people by God. not everyone can have them. 1st Corinthians, chapter 12 verses 8-10 tell what the 7 gifts are. One is speaking in tongues and the other is the interpretation of tongues. Also read chapters 13 & 14 which explains more about speaking in tongues. I have never spoken in tongues but I have other spiritual gifts. I have see many who faked speaking in tongues, even ministers, those people will get their just rewards but any person who tells people they will go to hell for not being moved by the spirit will have to answer to God for telling them such a thing since not all people get the gift of tongues.

Hi, there are two kinds of people everywhere.
the fake and the genuine.
the fakes cant be genuine
and the genuine can never fake it.
today pentecostals draw a lot of flak because there are many fakes. It happens because most people want to be seen as somebody. they're not really bothered about God.
I'm a pentecostal, and i've seen all kinds of stuff.
but if you have had an experience which is there in the scriptures, and provided you've followed every procedure given in the scriptures, you can be sure you're on the right track.

I have the gift of tongues. Since i've recieved it i've never lost it, i can pray in it whenever i want for as long as i want. However, this might sound funny, but I recieved tongues through mimicking sombody praying in tongues over me. They told me to try and keep repeating words they were saying and to try and to talk gibberish. I did that for a while but then realised i wasnt thinking about it anymore. So I stopped. From then on whenever i open my mouth and go to speak another language will come out instead and flow easier than English without thinking. So i do't think it's sac- religious to mimick tongues or to try and force the tongues to come because thats how i recieved it. I was praying for it but didnt know how to activate it until i mimicked it for a while.

In my life as a Christian for over 37 yrs. God has given me the gift of speaking in tongues, & also interpretation of tongue, & Prophecying, But we are to seek the best gift, & that best gift at that time can be anything, No, No one make me do it only the Holy Ghost, & I don't pretend to be doing it, I feel an annointing coming on me & when I give a message in tongues then someone else interpretates it, & there has been a few times I have interpretated my own tongues, After it is all over, I feel so weak , That takes me back to Jesus when he said who touch me, for I felt virtue or strenght leave him, the same with myself, after that annointing, then I get so weak because the annointing was strong & after the message in tongues that annointing starts to leave me. I don't go for these pentacostal people saying repeat after me, & then start beating them on the back, BTW, I am Apostolic Pentacostal & follow Acts 2:38

The gift of tongues proved very helpful to first-century Christians in preaching to those who spoke other languages. It was actually a sign to unbelievers. However, Paul, in writing to the Christian congregation at Corinth, directed that when meeting together, not all should speak in tongues, as strangers and unbelievers entering and not understanding would conclude that they were mad. He also recommended that the speaking in tongues “be limited to two or three at the most, and in turns.” However, if no one could translate, then the person speaking in a tongue was to remain silent in the congregation, speaking to himself and to God. (1Co 14:22-33) If no translating took place, his speaking in a tongue would not result in upbuilding others, for no one would listen to his speech because it would be meaningless to those unable to understand it.—1Co 14:2, 4.
If the person speaking in a tongue was unable to translate, then he did not understand what he himself was saying nor would others who were not familiar with that tongue, or language. Hence, Paul encouraged those having the gift of tongues to pray that they might also translate and thereby edify all listeners. From the foregoing, it can readily be seen why Paul, under inspiration, ranked speaking in tongues as a lesser gift and pointed out that in a congregation he would rather speak five words with his mind (understanding) than 10,000 words in a tongue.—1Co 14:11, 13-19.

Coersion is the reason that many Pentecostals don't receive the Holy Ghost or come to not believe later in life. It is a personal expereience and CANNOT be forced or coerced, no matter how much someone desires to see their loved one accept it.

Praying in tongues is definetly real, and to gorgeous, who says it isn't, you don't know what you are talking about. I know it's real, and it gets real results. People who resist the infilling of the Holy Spirit, who are freaked out by the idea of praying in tongues, and who mock it will never receive the gift. You can't mock the Holy Spirit, or be ashamed of him and expect to receive anything from him. It's an awesome gift, and I thank God every day for it!

It's horrendous to try and force someone to be filled with the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Ridiculous! You simply ask God to fill you and then yield to the Spirit inside you..........some people make it so complicated and are full of fear.
If you don't speak in tongues, you, of course, will still go to heaven. However, it's awesome. You have to do the speaking..........but the Spirit gives the words inside.
It's not the same as the Gift of Tongues with interpretation and many people get those two confused.
It's direct contact with God - allowing the Spirit to pray through you - even you don't know the Words - but neither does Satan. It's an awesome way to pray............and there is power in being filled up with God. I highly recommend seeking God for the filling of the Holy Spirit and speaking in your own prayer language.
Sorry about those coerced..........won't work.

It is the least of all the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The folks who speak in tongues believe they are speaking the language of heaven, the language of the Holy Ghost. Here is how the Holy Ghost speaks:
Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
With groanings that cannot be uttered, not in tongues.
Tongues means another language, not baby talk in church.
The ONLY times tongues were used in the Bible were to the Jews, not Gentiles, and were used as a sign to the JEWS, not the Gentiles. And the tongues were an earthly language, not mystical, or celestial.
Paul would have us all speak in tongues, (earthly languages) to reach those that do not speak the same language as you. But it is not the gibber-jabber you hear in these "tongues" churches. But given the choice, he would rather we prophesy.
Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
1 Corinthians 12:28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
1 Corinthians 14:21. In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.
1 Corinthians 14: 22. Wherefore tongues are for a sign, NOT TO THEM THAT BELIEVE, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
1 Corinthians 14:19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
