Strong (Grade 1 ANSI designation) deadbolt locks on the doors, padlocked garage doors, window frames with drill-through locks, hedges trimmed below window level, a sign from the security company in the front yard, and a large dog would be your best bets.

There are other things that scare off people once they break into the house. There are also things your grandmother could do so they don't break in. To prevent a break in, you could install motion senor lights on the front, sides, and back of the house. It could be slightly expensive, so I'd recommend putting the lights in the darkest places. If a person breaks in, there are things that scare them. An alarm is important. If possible, ask your alarm company for signs. Some alarm companies will give or sell you stakes that you put in the ground in front of your house. They're signs that scare people off. You could also try window stickers. You may want to consider motion lights in her house. There are light sensors you can buy and install into outlets in your house that turn on when you pass them, or when you open your front door. She should also leave a light on at night and not have the entire house dark at night. Try a timer on a lamp. Always shut all of the blinds in the house. If you really want to secure the house, install dead bolts on the doors or think of buying her a guard dog. I have a german shepard and I guarantee you that she would scare off anyone! I'd also think about asking your grandmother's neighbors to keep an eye out. Give them your phone number so they can call you if they see something of concern. I hope my answer helps.

The alarm worked, what more can you ask? That is the purpose of the alarm, to make noise and scare off the would be robbers. The only thing that comes to my mind is are there any signs outside and on every window and door saying that there is a security system? This usually prevents would be robbers from even trying.

You could display an NRA sticker on a window by your door or set up cameras. A dog will definitely help..but not one that barks at all "strange noises"...Mary's neighbors are probably plotting to break in her backyard to kill her annoying dog as we speak.

Video camera's are a great deterrent. Even if they are not real. One at the front door. One at the back. And one for a broad scan. You can buy fake ones, but a thief wouldn't know the difference.

buy a remington .12 gauge, 20 inch barrel synthetic stock pump shotgun. sit at home. wait, wait, squeeze the trigger, tell them you felt in danger.

Im sure they target her because of her age..alot of thiefs do their research. so, you'll be safe to buy a large dog, not one that will swallow your grandmother in one bite but one day will chew on tresspasser's tendons.
