It takes a while to become more flexible. It may or may not help you run faster.
There is a misconception about flexibility and stride length and injuries.
Your stride length should not be more than what is normal for you, and over striding will actually slow you.
You increase your stride behind you, not in front.
It is good to be flexible, but to improve your stride you need to work on strength.

Get to the library and do some research Kevin. Find a good stretching and flexibility book that has examples. Stretching and flexibility helps you avoid injury and maintain range of motion.
Running-specific training makes you faster.

Yoga - a lot of guys are turned off by the thought, but it is a great way to improve flexibility.
A lot of my friends on the football team at my university are required to take yoga classes to help improve their flexibility...

Stretching is good for flexibility.
For example, touching your head to your knee. Those kind of stretches are good.

stretch after you
warm up
cool down
and when you get out of a hot shower...(b/c your muscles are loose)
and whenever you think of it!
p.s.: also try having someone stretch your hamstrings...it really helps!
Good luck!
