Winston was forced out because of a government ban on tobacco companies advertising with sports venues. Nextel signed up to be the series sponsor and was right in the middle of a buy out by Sprint at the time. They were allowed one name change per their contract with NASCAR, but only one so it should stay the Sprint Cup Series for the next six race seasons at least.

NASCAR isn't the one that is changing it. Winston stopped sponsoring NASCAR because it wasn't beneficial for them anymore. Tobacco companies are not allowed to advertise on TV anymore and because of that, Winston was not able to advertise for any Winston Cup Series races. So, Winston had to drop out because they weren't making any money out of the deal...plus NASCAR did wan't more money for the title sponsorship as well.

As for the change from NEXTEL to Sprint, Sprint bought out NEXTEL and it was only a matter of time until the title sponsorship name would be changed. Sprint wanted to give it a little bit of time to allow people to get used to calling the new company Sprint rather than NEXTEL. These companies have to slowly transition the names from one to the other in order to be able to get people to call their corporation by the correct name. There was absolutely nothing to do with money or NASCAR on that change. It was just the NEXTEL and Sprint merger.

Sprint bought out Nextel in 2005 and took the Nextel Yellow colors when they got an updated post-Nextel buyout logo. NASCAR is the last to have the Nextel name phased out by the Sprint takeover. hences the name change in the cup. meanwhile NASCAR is trying to look good to the kids by letting Busch beers leave the Busch series and then let the sponsorship for the company be replaced by an Insurance company. Nationwide is the company that's taking over the second series of NASCAR. but petty soon Craftsman may end up leaving the Truck Series and replaced by AutoZone (this is not true or rumor, i just made the truck series name change part up to prove a point.). and Lowe's Motor Speedway may have started tjhe venues named by a company thing.

Nascar is not changing sponsors, the sponsors are changing sponsors. There was a problem with the image of Winston, being that they sell cigarettes that kill people. Nextel and Sprint merged with Spring getting the best of that deal, therefore Nextel is responsible for this latest change. It will be the same sponsor, just reflect their new name (Sprint Nextel).

They really didn't "change" sponsors this time, Sprint merely aquired Nextel. These telecommunications companies are merging and changing their names all the time these days. That was what caused the big controversy when Cingular was absorbed by AT&T. Nextel/Sprint has an exclusivity clause that went along with their title sponsorship and they did not want to allow the 31 car to switch from one to the other. That was a big mess in the courts with decisions being overturned and appeals with Sprint winning out in the end.

... I'm sure that every reason here that ws given was right (money). What is going to happen is if they keep doing sponsors the way they did RCR's sponsor and how they did Busch Series sponsor then nobody will want to invest in them. Nascar could eventually shoot themselves in the foot (so to speak).

At least NASCAR isn't sponsored by Planters Peanuts, then it would be called the "Nut Cup"

NASCAR isn't changing sponsors. When contracts end, and NASCAR or the sponsor renegotiate the bottom line, one or the other doesn't like the outcome. The result, a new sponsor.
