Our bodies cannot store much protein as we can store fat. Therefore proteins are necessary in our diets, both as children and adults. Children require more, as they are growing. Proteins are broken down into their respective amino acids and then reassembled in the body to form the various tissues such as bone, muscle, skin, etc, etc. The protein we eat must contain the nine or so essential amino acids that cannot be made by the human body.

There is a condition in children called kwashiorkor where the patient has enough calories to sustain life, but not enough protein. These poor children appear very pathetic with swollen bellies, peeling skin, faded hair and edematous extremities.

because their bodies are still underdeveloped and they really need the extra proteins as well as other nutrients to help them through their growth stages. think of it as when they're young they're like the foundation of a house. you can't do much with just a foundation until you bring in more materials to help build it up big and strong.
