If I were in your position, I'd be making a huge fuss - call a reporter and offer them an interview so they can dispel the myth that the "victims" are the poor illegal immigrants who are being sent away by our mean nasty laws. (use pouty voice here)

Or get information from SS on how many no-match letters were sent and threaten lawsuits to the employers who continued to employ him. Call the ACLU and have THEM fight for you (wouldn't that be ironic?).

Call the senators that are holding up the no-match letters right now, and ask them what you're supposed to do.

File a police report in every jurisdiction that he used it in - one of them will prosecute. If they won't, back to your friendly reporter - ask them to report on why. And tell the ACLU that you're being discriminated against because of your national origin.

I hope you've already contact ICE to see about getting him deported.

This is one of the things that the politicians just don't seem to understand about the effect of illegal immigration in this country. All of the illegals that are working in this country have to be using someone else's SSN. If they don't have a number, they can't work. It is true that this should not affect him in the future, but it can still be a hassle. But it is a consequence of this problem. If they won't prosecute someone for being in the country illegally, then they should be able to prosecute them for fraud.

I agree.....ID theft is a FEDERAL offense and should be punished accordingly. People are spending untold hours and money to fix something they had no part in while the illegal walks. I believe people should be able to personally sue the person who has stolen their number and some form of compensation given. I'm sick of this attitude that it's "just a number". Maybe to the illegal it's "just a number" but that's a number that tracks you throughout your life and it's not a trivial matter to mess with it.

Identity theft and trafficking in SS #s, CC #s, etc is big business.
Trouble is, it's tough to track down a lot of illegals because they move around. Some large part of them are farm workers, constructions workers, laborers. They live below the radar; no bank accounts, spend cash, use a calling card, ...

And, you prompt me to check and be sure nobody else is using my number. I've never looked...

From what I have heard about fixing credit after an identity has been stolen I think it'd be easier to file bankruptcy. Just to fix an error on my credit report cost me 16 dollars.

Because we aren't enforcing our own immigration laws. Sue the illegal in court. That ought to at least scare him into another area of the country.

No, it's not right. Too bad you can't just keep the money he paid into your son's Social Security account as compensation for your trouble!

It's sad that we live in a country where stolen SSN, are treated like jay walking tickets, if at all. They can ruin your sons credit even before your son is old enough to vote, then walk away as if it was a cake walk
