Don't worry dear, they won't arrest him, the Sheriff was there to serve court papers. Your b/f is being taken to small claims court to collect a debt he owes.
Many local sheriffs offices make money by charging for process serving.

There are not longer debtor jails in use today.

If this case it solely about unpaid credit card debt, then he will not be arrested. He will be served papers (probably last night), he will go to court, he will lose, they will do what they can to collect. He will not go to jail.

If there's any case of identity theft or fraud or something like that then the whole thing changes.

His best idea is to call the lawyer representing MIdland or the CC company and work out a deal before it goes to court.

If it was from a collections company (midland, you say) then a rep. from midland would have accompanied the sheriffs men (the sheriffs men .. that so just made me think of robin hood) *sorry. ANYWAY....usually local and county law enforcement does NOT get involved with collecting debts such as that. The cc companies hire collectors to do that sort of thing... so to me this is really weird. I'll try to keep looking for info for you ... in the mean time please have your bf attempt to call midland and see what this is in regards to. Or his parents may be able to call. (I'm sure the persons that came to your house left a contact number if you all were to see him). They might release info to his parents but i strongly suggest he personally call. If this is a cc collection than he may be able to talk to them and set up payment arrangements. good luck -- keep faith -- and merry Christmas to you also

You don't go to jail for debt. The sheriff's police were probably trying to serve a summons to court because the bf is being sued. (The police aren't making extra money, this is part of their job.)

The only other place for the police would be after a court proceeding where the would go to supervise the seizure of assets or an eviction, if ordered by the court.

Law enforcement would only get involved if there was a form of fraud comitted. We do not have debtors prison in this country.
