I was listening to a man speaking about this just last night. He confessed to being a D student and wondered how all those "A brains" got such good grades? It wasn't until many years later he stumbled on why. Because they worked at it.

They read books. They paid attention in class instead of living in their own world in the back of the room. They participated so they would have a stake in the material. They were no smarter than he was but used what they had where it counted.

First, you need to do your homework, and well.
Second, you need to be able prioritize your efforts in classes according to how well you are already doing in them, and how difficult they are relative to other classes.
Third, you need to read and understand fully everything that you are assigned. If you read beyond what is assigned to you, make sure that you remember it.
Fourth, you need to make sure you are learning information and reciting that information over a long period of time (don't cram).
Fifth, you need to make sure that you do not snap under pressure, and that you know how to take tests well (even when you may not necessarily know the answers, you need to be acquainted with how to answer effectively with minimal information).
Sixth, it never hurts to do assignments incredibly well to the extent that your teacher is left awestruck. Remember, however, that brown-nosing will get you nowhere.
And, finally, you pretty much need to prioritize school over all else. However, having hobbies and other activities that you can manage in addition to school work will help you cope with stress (assuming that the very fact that they make you have a more complicated schedule does not cause you excessive stress in of itself).

So, in short, you need to have good memorization, organization, and stress handling skills, aside from the obvious intelligence required to reach that rank. And I say this, having been 2nd rank in my own school (sob).
