So, I'm thinking about getting one to stick in my sock(ankle holster) for the times that a belt holster and a larger weapon aren't appropriate.

So what can you tell me about the model 1? Is it reliable? Is it accurate? Can it take 3" .410 shells?

I understand this is a last ditch weapon.

Actually, they are pretty cool. I have a #1 myself but it will only chamber 2 1/2" 410 Gauge Shotgun Shells (After all the barrel is only 3" long). I've fired about 15 rounds of 410 -21/2" #4 and a few rounds of the "Novelty" Buckshot. Ten feet or less and you're a gonner..if the shot doesn't kill them flame will set the "Bad Guys" on fire...lol

Worse yet was the #1 Magnum in 45-70 caliber..Another story...

American Derringer Model 1

It's OK, on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being best, i'd give it a 5 overall. But I have to add, that an ankle holster is a terrible idea. Think about an emergency and needing to get to the firearm in a hurry. The closest I ever came to being shot off duty was when I carred a 2" barreled revolver in an ankle holster, I walked in on a guy in my aunts house, I dropped to get the revolver out of the holster and before I even came close, he had a pistol stuck in my face. I got lucky, he didn't want to shoot me, he just ran out of the house. By the end of the day, that ankle holster was in the garbage and I had a properly fitting IWB holster. Years later, I had a small IWB holster made just for a derringer. It left the derringer down just below my belt level, and in a suit, if I removed my jacket, it wasn't even noticeable, yet gave me a much better access to the weapon if needed. But like you mentioned, a derringer is a last ditch weapon, and if things get to the point you need it, you better be able to get to it quick. Just my 2 cents worth.

I've never fired one but sold a few and have handled them. They were well made and we never had one come back so reliabilty must have been good also. It seems to me that there was a modle that would chamber a 3" .410 along with the .45colt but it's been many many moons since I've handled one so don't hold me to it. I remember one .410 loading that I thought would be interesting in this pistol. It had 4 000buck stacked one on top of the other.

Majority rule and mob rule are basically the same thing. Lynching is a democratic process. That's why America is democratic, constitutional, republican, and federal. People democratically elect representatives to govern, but the actions of those representatives are limited by the Constitution. The Constitution guarantees sovereignty to each of the several states and can only be changed with the approval of the states AND the representatives.
