Here you go, God bless you with five children. I'm the oldest of five. Our favs were pb&j, potato chip sandwich and boloney.

History of the sandwich

Peanut butter was first widely introduced in 1904 at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition although it had been sold as a medical nutritional supplement in St. Louis, Missouri for about 15 years. There is no mention in print of the PB&J prior to 1940. While no one can take credit for the sandwich's invention, one thing that can be ascertained was that both peanut butter and jelly were packed with United States Army K-rations in World War II. The combination proved so popular that returning GIs made peanut butter and jelly sales soar.[citation needed]

Shelf-life

Generally

PB&J sandwiches are also popular because they can be kept for relatively long periods without refrigeration (unlike, for example, a ham and cheese with mayonnaise).

Military experiments

The United States Department of Defense is researching ways of preserving a PB&J for up to 3 years for its combat troops in the field. Although peanut butter and jelly has been available in the military instant food Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE) for many years, it proved difficult to keep bread from spoiling.

Many people believe that prior to the introduction of PBJ to the army in the 1940's it was exclusively a "southern" treat. Dr. George Washington Carver began his peanut research at Tuskeegee Institute in Alabama. While peanut butter had already been created by then, Dr. Carver developed more than 300 other uses for peanuts and so improved peanut horticulture that he is considered by many to be the father of the peanut industry. It was his fascination with peanuts that fueled a quiet peanut revolution, which saw the addition of PBJ in homes throughout the south in the 1930's

The relationship between children and peanut butter was cemented in the late 1920s, when Gustav Papendick invented a process for slicing and wrapping bread. Sliced bread meant that children could make sandwiches themselves without slicing the bread with a potentially dangerous knife. As a consequence of low cost, high nutrition, and ease of assembling, peanut butter sandwiches became one of the top children's meals during the Depression."

My Grandmother once told of eating PBJ sandwiches for weeks on end when her family began their forced migration out west from Oklahoma during the dust bowl disaster of the 1930's. She said even that didn't keep the kids (Mom and her siblings) from liking it.
