If you're reading an American recipe, and dealing in American cups, then as the other answers say, it's eight cups to half a gallon.
However in other parts of the world, a gallon is rather more than in the US. In the UK, a pint is 20 fluid ounces, or two and a half US cups, so a quart is 40 fluid ounces (5 US cups) and thus half a gallon, or two quarts, is in fact ten cups.
If you're dealing in metric cups, then one cup is quarter of a litre (250ml) which is close to 8 fluid ounces, but not exact.
