The use of a railway is the most efficient mode of transportation due to the large quantity 1 rail car can handle. In most cases, one rail car can handle the same volume 6 to 8 tractor-trailers can handle. The railway systems are specifically built to handle excessive weight whereas the tractor-trailers are restricted by federal and state regulations.

Also there is the fact that one or two locomotives are capable of handling traffic that equals hundreds on tractor trailers. This cuts down on the congestion on the highways and in the cities. This also cuts down on the gasses released into the air, that has been a huge topic lately.

In regards to handling people, in larger cities, these best mode of transportation is the use of public transportation. As with the freight that was mentioned above, the use of public transportation, including bus and rail, cuts down on congestion within the cities and also cuts down on the gasses released into the air. Another aspect of rail transportation is there are several rail systems that use locomotives "fueled" by electricity instead of burning fossil fuel to power the engines.

Hope this helps.

You go to the station, having either purchased a ticket on-line before hand, or ready to buy one at the ticket office (if there is one) or from the conductor on board if there is not. You check what platform your train is to arrive on, or is standing if it is a terminal station , and you board it. If you are on a long distance train you may be able to buy drinks or a snack. You DO NOT use your mobile phone etc. if you are in a quiet carriage.
