Noise fades in and out kind of like lifters but on the passengers side of the engine mostly at idle and rev it up the chain gets quiet. Most old Stanzas need timing chain guides by about 100,000 miles. The new guide is better made don't wait till the chain wears a hole in the timing chain case.

many of those engines have the issue with either chair or the camshafts. I bought my 92 stanza qith 160 K and the engine finally blew up at 201 K, and all the time it was knocking like crazy.... people on gas stations asked me if it had any oil in it. Oh, and the dealer couldn't find the problem without disassembling the engine.

It would quiet down sometimes completely but then would restart the knocking noise.

next generation altimas still have a major issue with timing chaing rattle on KA24DE
