How was James, “the brother of the Lord,” (Matt. 13:55, Acts 15:13-21, 1 Cor. 15:7, Gal. 1:19) related to Jesus. All believers agree he was related, but no one knows exactly how.

The possibilities are that James was:

1. A full brother of Jesus, another Son of God born of the Blessed Virgin Mary. No one to my knowledge accepts that God had another child by the Blessed Virgin Mary.

2. A half-brother of Jesus, a younger son of Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary. Some Christians believe this possibility but most Christians including those who are Catholic and Eastern Orthodox believe that Mary remained a virgin for her entire life.

3. A stepbrother of Jesus, a son of Joseph and a previous wife. Many Christians believe that Joseph had a least one previous marriage that resulted in children.

4. A stepbrother of Jesus, an adopted son of Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary. When parents died, relatives frequently took their children in and raised them as thier own. An adopted orphaned boy would be considered the brother of Jesus.

5. A cousin of Jesus. The Aramaic language has no word for cousin. Aramaic frequently uses the word “aha,” which we translate into Greek as “adelphos” or English as brother, for cousin.

6. A comrade of Jesus. This is a remote possibility. Greek uses adelphos the same as English does in “a band of brothers.”

Possibilities 1 and 2 obviously go against Catholic beliefs.

The Catholic Church prefers possibility 5 but 3, 4 and 6 would not go against doctrine.

Another point: John 19:26-27 states:

When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour the disciple (John) took her into his home.

This was Jesus entrusting the Apostle John with the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary who by Jewish law and tradition would be without support after her only son's death.

This threatened loss of support for Mary also strengthens the logic that Jesus' "brothers and sisters" were not the natural children of Mary who should have stepped in to care for her.

With love in Christ.

Mary and Joseph obviously did have a larger family Mark 6 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Juda, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. I have had discussion with a Spanish man of Catholic descent who asked his priest about this. The Catholic answer is that, Oh well the words for brothers and sisters can also apply to cousins or nephews and nieces, I forget which. Really it is just an excuse for maintaining the false doctrine of the 'ever virgin' Mary. For why should they be anything other than brothers and sisters? And why should Mary remain without further children after the birth of Jesus? I think James, who wrote the Letter in the New Testament, is thought to be Jesus' brother as mentioned in this verse.

'"Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother's name Mary, and aren't his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? Aren't all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all these things?"' Matthew 13:55-56 NIV

Not only did Mary have at least eight children, she must have had them all when Joseph was her husband, or else the people of Nazareth would not have treated Jesus as in any way different from his siblings. They cannot even have known about Jesus' birth in Bethlehem or his early life in Egypt.

Many children were regarded as a blessing from God, and barrenness almost a curse. In the interests of its depraved political sociopathy, the cult of Rome insults Mary.

Who ever said there was no word for cousin in the New Testament should look at Luke1:36
Jesus had actual brothers and sisters please don't distort the Scriptures in favor of tradition. If they were cousins the Bible would have said cousins just like it said Elizabeth was Mary's cousin.

Andre uses one of the two source passages to identify his brothers. Yeshu`a also had a half-sister called Salome who went with his mother Maryam to embalm his body, as was the tradition - see Mark16v1.

According to wiki:

"The New Testament has several references to the "brothers" and "sisters" of Jesus, who, however, are nowhere referred to as Mary's children. Aramaic, the language spoken by Jesus and his disciples, lacked a specific word for "cousin," so that the word "brother" was used instead. This is true also of Hebrew, and there are several places in the Old Testament that use the word "brother" to mean nephew or cousin."

Unfortunately, although the fact that Jesus had siblings is mentioned in the Bible, their names are not given.

ah, you don't expect the church to tell you that do you? but that would change everything (that the church has been preaching for the last 2000 years or so).

all the lies, editing and re editing would become common knowledge, and the whole thing would start to unravel.
