I have never owned any of those, so I don't know first hand. What I think is that with any breed of dog (no matter how small or large), any breed can attack. It all depends on how you raise and if you abuse it. It also depends on if a random person comes up and starts torturing it. I don't think any dog is just mean because of their breed.
My next door neighbor had a rottweiler for years (pure-bred). He had him since I was really little and I'm now 21. He recently had to put him to sleep by no other choice. The dog was old and very ill and nothing could be done with him. Not once was anyone ever hurt by the dog. My next door neighbor even has two small children right now, they weren't ever hurt. He protected his house and even the houses next to him so much that if someone came into our yard, he'd bark at them, but he never did anything to him. If we knew the person we'd just be like "It's okay". and he'd go on with his day. But he never bit anyone. He was a good dog, and just because he was a rottweiler, didn't in any way mean he was mean.
I think most dog attacks and meaness are provoked. I think people also are scared and hate the dogs because those are the only attacks you hear about. You don't ever hear about any other breeds that attack people, but it does happen. If it's provoked most of the time.

Certain breeds have more of a tendency towards aggression than others, usually because they've been bred to be guard dogs, and are loyal and protective by nature. But there's no reason for any dog to turn out aggressive - if there's a 'problem' dog that's down to the irresponsibility or ignorance of the owner. Sure, if you meet a random rottweiler it's more likely to be aggressive than if you meet a random cavalier king charles - but that's because people like to get rottweilers as status symbols and turn them into something they shouldn't be.
Certainly the media has played a large part in creating a bad image of certain breeds - a picture of a big, growling rottie is going to sell more papers than a picture of a little yappy chihuahua or westie - even though these are the dogs I tend to be more wary of than rotties.
So it's partly to do with the media, and partly the type of people who tend to go for certain breeds of dogs.

I have two pit bulls and people they meet always say that they don't know they are pits. My dogs are very friendly and playful. Since they are big being playful can scare people. Plus they look like pits. I stongly believe that any dog will be protective of their owners & property regarldess of the training. My dogs have never attempted to attack anyone. They do not like other dogs very much. They are always on a leash or in the fenced yard to protect them and others. I grew up with a poodle that was very mean towards people and swore I would ensure any furture dog I had would be trained not to be mean. Some dogs have mean pesonalities just like people.

irresponsible people make them that way. Just because they look mean doesnt mean they are. I have raised pits all my life and they have been the most loyal and sweet pets I have ever had, and I had chow chows and a st. bernard, and the pits were sweeter and smarter than both of those. We also used to raise doberman too, had 22 at the same time, and not a one of them were mean. Rotts are great dogs too. Dont feed into statistics, people is what causes animals to be mean. Watch Animal precinct and those type shows on Animal planet. Trust me, it may not seem like it, but u will learn a lot!

Certain breeds are born with certain genetics predispositions that will dictate much of their actions later in life. People can do their part to enhance the genetics built in to a dog and have done a marvelous job by screwing up the once noble Dobie and Rottie and making them less then half of the dogs they used to be...
As far as pit type dogs, for the one millionth time, they were born animal aggressive, if they were bred correctly, you do not train them to fight, you allow them to..
No, it is not so much that people are to blame for raising a bad dog, it is the genetics of the dog that matter most.

Oh yeah, this is a much discussed topic.
OK, I have had a rotty cross and various other large dogs. I raised them well, they were socialised and gorgeous.
BUT. One day my rotty cross and my german shep x mauled and killed an elderly person's chihuahua. The little dog tried to attack me, and they defended me.
Now I wasn't a bad dog owner, and the dogs weren't bad dogs. But they are BIG dogs - and have a look what they are bred for. They are CAPABLE of doing a lot of damage. A small dog might attack but it won't kill someone. Big dogs have the capacity to kill or seriously injure, and many of the breeds are bred for protection, attack, whatever.
So. Maybe great owners can turn them into great dogs. But there is always a chance they can do damage and the owners have to have 100% control and not rely on good training alone. A well trained dog can still get into a dog fight, and can still be provoked.
I love big dogs and most are very, very sweet (sometimes more so than a little dog) - but you'll never see a chihuahua in the paper for killing a child.

I think it might have an effect on the behavior of the dog.its wrong to make pitbulls like that because its bacilly making them unhealthy and disformed. The original pitbul was much better looking and healthier looking than the current one, but the breeders wont allow it because that whats people want. So there are barely none healthy pitbulls left. sad.

DO NOT BELIEVE THOSE WHO BLAME IT ON IRRESPONSIBLE ACTIONS!
These breeds are genetically bread to be the way they are. For Example the Doberman was bread to have a genetic trait from the Red Pincher causing its brain to grow too large for its skull, this causes extreme pain and causes the dog to go crazy. Just like sheep dogs were bread to protect sheep and bull mastiffs were bread by romans for war dogs these breeds are bread to be aggressive.
