These are huge number of .xls and .doc files which needs to be transferred over the net. Even if someone can provide a service of around 500MB, that should be good enough, so that I can do the same operation 4 times.

I'm guessing this is a one-time, point-to-point copy, since you shouldn't be serving up .xls or .doc files for general consumption: they only work with expensive proprietary software, so you might be encouraging piracy.

As long as at least one end has a static IP address, you don't need an intermediate server: you can just use scp to transfer the files. If the receiving machine is behind NAT, you will have to configure the router to forward incoming traffic on port 22 to the correct local IP address.

But what's wrong with just burning a DVD, or copying the files to a suitable size USB flash drive?

Somebody has already mentioned Diino.com http://www.diino.com, however, this can take a very long time, or the transmission gets stuck after 90%... I have very mixed experiences with it.
Another cheap way is using SKYPE's "Send" function. No limit and "free" if you have an Internet flat rate!
