Really bad leg cramps. They use this term in Northern America I think.

It is when the muscles suddenly tighten and strain causing a wave of pain to roll through the limb. Usually when suddenly moving after a long period of inactivity (you can charlie horse during a post nap yawn for example)

A "charlie horse" is a sharp, painful muscle contraction in your calf muscles of either leg. It can be experienced during pregnancy, as a result of dehydration, lack of potassium, or for a variety of other reasons.

I used to get them all the time before I started taking multivitamins.. now I haven't had one in a year or so, I don't think. I think, for me, it was a lack of potassium.

Hey,

A 'Charlie Horse' is a painful contusion (bruise) of the quadriceps muscle, it is not a cramp. Causes of them hormonal imbalances, dehydration, side effects of medication, or more seriously, diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and neuropathy. They are also a common complaint during pregnancy.
