England, France, Spain, Portugal come right up in my mind!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Again, I found bkk's answer is insulting Chinese with no fact nor support and totally not related to this question.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
P.S. to bkk
I have never denied anything that happened in the past or in our history but what I would like to tell everyone here is we are improving here in China and trying our best to make our country to be a better place to live.
I'm very positive, no matter how hard you (bkk) point your finger to me!!!!!!!!!!! Your words never can stop China to show the world how much it has changed from 1948 to1968 to 1988 to 2008. If you really have read our history, perhaps, it is time that you should stop picking on the bad but also look into how much we progressed with the size of our population increased. Or, perhaps, you should stop being so jealous to Chinese and face to the reality!
I'm working here (in Beijing) with professionals from different countries, we look on the bright sides and are always excited about our achievements while a person like you can never feel the same we do.
Again, I never say China is prefect, but I believe that it is going to be better than before for sure.

It's somewhat incorrect to include China as being "imperialized." China was only semi-colonial. Africa and the Pacific were completely colonial.

United Kingdom, France, and the Netherlands were the established colonial powers in Asia. The Portuguese established and monopolized trade routes early on but were replaced by the Dutch.

Lots of them. But none were as bad to the Chinese as the Chinese themselves have been to each other.
Edit : - So ai_leen finds my answer insulting with " no fact or support " All I can say is look at your history ai_leen !! Your Emperors killed millions throughout your history and your great Chairman Mao was responsible for the murder of at least 10 million of his own people. Didn't students murder their teachers during the cultural revolution? Didn't children kill members of their own families? Were they not encouraged to do so by CHINESE people?
Come out of denial ai_leen, face up to the truth of your past, then you, your country and countrymen will be able to move into the modern world and join the rest of us. Until you do, you simply will not be taken seriously.
Did the massacre in Tianamen square not happen? Do your Govt. not arrest and torture followers of Fallun Gong? ( I take it that you know about the torture prison in Shenyang or do you choose to ignore this as well )? Does your Govt. not remove the organs of political and criminal prisoners to sell to rich CHINESE people?
Stop trying to defend the indefensible. You are as bad as the Japanese people that deny the massacre of Nanjing.
ADMIT THE FAULTS OF YOUR PREDECESSORS. ADMIT THE TRUTH !! By not doing so you are you are encouraging the rest of the world to not take you or your country seriously.
If you find the truth about your country's past insulting thats just too bad !
ai_leen.
You say that you and your collegues always look on the bright side when it comes to China. THATS THE PROBLEM WITH CHINESE PEOPLE !!!!
Up to 3000 dead in Tianamen square ? " Mustn't grumble, it's for the good of the country "
People tortured and killed for their religeous beliefs? " Mustn't grumble it's for the good of the country "
200 children stolen or sold everyday? "Mustn't grumble...."
People imprisoned for speaking their mind? "Mustn't grumble...
etc.etc.etc.
Can't you see that by looking on the bright side you are allowing these attrocities to continue? Cant you see that by ignoring these and the many other terrible things that your Govt. and people do, you are slently condoning them?
You seem to defend China against everyone that dares to criticise it. Why?
I went to your country intending to help it's young people through Education. I arrived full of hope and with an open mind. During the 2 years I was there I was constantly lied to, cheated and conned. My students regularly told me to " F**k off ". They stole from me, they racially abused me, they treated me with complete and utter contempt and disrespect. This attitude was reflected everywhere I went, by the vast majority of Chinese people, and I worked in different regions in middle schools and Universities. Thats why I have NOTHING good to say about China or the Chinese. Because of the way they treated me. I can only reflect my own experience. I do not have one good memory!
The thing I noticed most about the Chinese people is their complete refusal to accept personal responsibility. When something went wrong it was always somebody else's fault. They blame the horrendous things that they have allowed to happen to them in the past on " Laowai " if they can. Even when it was nothing to do with foriegn people. Why is that?
You grew up in Hong Kong. Wasn't that under BRITISH administration for over 100 years? Did it not prosper during this time? Why didn't the mainland? Why is China many, many years behind modern industrialised nations? Was it " Laowai " that prevented you from developing? Or was it the Chinese people themselves under the wonderfull leadership of Chairman Mao?
You and your foriegn friends may look on the bright side I prefer to look at the reality of China and the Chinese people and will continue to reflect that in my posts here. Maybe I am wrong but I would simply ask why do most people that go to work in China not stay longer than one contract?
You say I should look at the good things in your history, exactly what are those things? you say I am jealous, Jealous of what?
You have said in a previous post that I am not welcome in China because , I presume, I have been critical. Isn't that the attitude of dictators? They simply cannot accept criticism even when it is truthfull and honest, and will silence it any way they can. What a great advert you are for your new modernising country ! What a lovely modern attitude you have!
Remember dear ai_leen the abuses that have stained your history are continueing TODAY. NOW !! And what do you do ?.... you look on the bright side !! Thats a typical Chinese attitude. It's not " looking on the bright side " it's looking the other way!
Shame on you .
