Neither the Canon Rebel nor the Nikon D40X have image stabilization when makes them unstable when using a telephoto. Nevertheless, you can spend for auxiliary telephotos like the VRs from Nikon which are not cheap.
There's a better solution , a camera which is smaller and lighter than either the Rebel or D40X: It's the Olympus E-510 10 megapixel with active CMOS LCD [which is found on the Nikon 200/300]; 12-bit [vs. 8 bit] RAW file generations; a 3 fps engine which faster than either the Nikon or Canon; with a two lense kit ranging from 18 mm to 200 mm, all selling for $686 from samys.com.
Good luck!

A digital SLR camera purchasing is a grave step for a photografer. Before choosing between Nikon D40s, D80 or Nikon D300, Canon EOS 40D or EOS 400D and Fujifilm S5 / IS Pro or Sony A700 it’s better to know: are you ready to go? It is important to know SLR camera’s main distinctions from a digital compact and an SLR-like camera. Otherwise, it is possible to waste money for a useless gadget.
Digital SLR camera great advantages
- Physically large sensor: Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III Full Frame - 36 x 24 mm, Nikon D40s - 23.7 x 15.6 mm instead of Fujifilm S8000 - 1/2.35 inch, Canon S5 IS – 1/2.5 inch 5.76 x 4.29 mm, as a result: higher ISO sensitivity, low noise
- Uses mirror and prism system and viewfinder, faster phase detection autofocusing, high quality viewing, as a result: no shutter lag, great shooting speed
- Swapping lenses and accessories for any photography case
- Hight quality body, long battery life
Digital SLR camera moot advantages
- More expencive, especially with lenses, flashs etc
- Less convenient than compacts, some bulky
- No support video clips with sound
- Require more photographic education to take advantage of the greater capabilities

Check prices on the Pentax K100D Super. Its 6.1mp and has Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body. It can use every K-mount lens made since 1975 so you have access to a lot of quality glass. You'll have to manually focus the older lenses but at least they'll have the benefit of IS.
You can read a review of it at shutterbug.com or just buy the Jan. 2008 issue. They listed the price as $549.95 with the Pentax SMCP-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL AF Zoom lens.
