Yep. Read about Mother Teresa's more or less secret thoughts. She wasn't atheist, but sure wasn't buying into the whole of monotheism, that's for sure.

trust me on this one they wouldn't let you do missionary work unless they believed you were a bible thumper

Why not start your own organization and travel to other countries doing good in the name of humanity and you wont need to pretend to be something you are not
and I am sure you could get funding because of what you are doing .

Why don't you go to a church and find out. Personally I don't think you should go around brainwashing people in exchange for helping them. Basically its like, sure we'll help you little poor person, but you have to listen to me go on and on and on about my non-existent god. People in such a horrible state will believe in anything if it helps them get by day to day.

Don't pretend that helping would be your goal. Still, many people make quite a bit of money out of religious pretense, and you would probably not be any worse than the rest of them.

I was just thinking about this the other day. My wife wants to do the mission thing when we get old and if it's that important to her, I think I'd indulge her.

Why would you be a missionary then? Go volunteer somewhere and fill up your empty days.

You don't have to help them in the name of religion, but in the name of humanity.

There are tons of "churchie" organizations that dont require travel nor witnessing that a NonChristian would be welcome in participating in.
