Like being allergic to peanuts on flights that serve them?

I never thought about it until I saw the Airline show about Southwest Airlines. A passenger who was allergic to peanuts claimed he could have died when he inhaled peanut dust from another passenger who was eating peanuts a few rows away.

That would mean other flight crew in the flight deck could not snack on peanuts or a flight attendant who served peanuts could not serve or handle the pilots food.

Considering the medical examination law enforcement of the JAA the following:

You can usually become a pilot for as long as your allergy does not risk your performance as a pilot.

This means that when suffering an allergic reaction, you may not become incapacitated, or otherwise be obstructed in performing your duty.

Usually you will be able to control your allergy with prescribed medication, but then you must report this to your medical examiner. You also must be sure that using that medication does not have any negative effect on your performance or awareness.

The matter of restriction also depends wether you are up for class 1/2/3 medical. Check your nations Flight Crew Licensing (FCL) requirements or inform yourself by talking to a registered aviation medical examiner.

i have brutal seasonal allergies and it hasn't hindered, in any significant way , my flying career, but many traditional anti-histamines are verbotten. However newer, non-drowsy formulations maybe approved....you'll have to check within your enforcement area.
If a pilot had the type of allergy that resulted in an anaphylactic reaction upon a slight exposure...I'm not sure.....good question!
