So many people think that women in Islam are oppressed. Why? Is it because we wear a hijab to keep ourselves modest and away from lustful eyes, unlike the skimpy dancers they show on tv? Is it because of rumors like the one the asker just said? Is it because we wear burkas to be modest and keep our beauty for our husbands only? Is it because a man can have 4 wives in Islam only if they have pity for the woman and is trying to save them from the evils of war, or because they have pity for the widow? Ignorance is contagious.

OK..I'll be honest here...Islam=freedom(i know am gonna get Lot's of thumbs down for this)..i don't care cause it's the truth!
every middle eastern country and non-middle eastern(Islamic country)have certain rules!....some of them oppress women and some don't!...Islam forbids that!(oppression)...it's culture that rules these days!...some of them act in the name of Islam when actually it's all about culture and politics!....the head scarf and covering from head to toe is not necessary!..in Kaaba women must not cover(i mean covering there faces)...Islam asks for modesty for both men and women!..and YES men and women are EQUAL in Islam!...when a man marries 4! back at old days it was for noble reasons..now when a man does that he is considered a player!(which is true)...who would do that today..come on!...unless he has pure intentions!..but Muslim women today can take care of themselves!...people believe it or not some of the Muslim countries have strong Muslim women!.....I'll say it again this religion is real and a wonderful religion!...feel free to disagree.
~peace~

Its so funny that all what non Muslims know about Islam is that a man can marry 4 women!! What does that tell you about men in general? ;)
Women aren't oppressed in Islam;
-we have the right to inherit
- the right to choose a spouse
-the right to keep our name after marriage unlike most western countries
-we've the right for education
-to equal treatment
- keep the money we earn for ourselves and not forced to give it to the husband
-we get equal pay for the same job unlike other countries where women don't.
In hadith of the Prophet PBUH he says " paradise lies under a mother's feet" what more honour for a woman is there?
In Allah's eyes man and woman are equal.
Some people take individual incidents and advocate them as a general rule.
One of Oprah's shows was talking about the increasing percent of pregnant women murdered by their boyfriends or husbands. Does that mean that ALL Christian American men do that?
Which country has the highest percent of domestic violence against women? Just stop and think for a bit.

Yes. All of the above. There are many different definitions of oppressed in English, and muslim women apply in almost all of them. For example, you give all of these reasons why women might want to be enslaved. OK. Now I ask you. If a muslim woman did not want to be as "modest" as you suggest, what happens? She gets murdered. The only question is which respectful muslim man will be the one to kill her first. Does that not sound oppressive to you? There is no freedom not to conform. Do you really not understand how that is oppression?

s Yes but it is not for the reaons that you speak of. It is for this reason that I feel the women are oppressed. It is because I feel that no women should have to cover her body to be clean or to be a good women. While it is wise to dress modest then thier is no need to run around all covered up I feel. Also who can judge rather a women has sinned other then God himself? But I have read where poor women die in what is called mercy killings. When it comes down to this kind of treatment against women that have done nothing other then make a bad mistake and have to pay for it with her very own life. Then you bet the women are very much oppresseed. I wouldn't care what religion you are. When anyone can get away with killing so easily in the name of thier religion or anything for that matter, then it is wrong. there is no just God that believes in killing out of nothing at all, I think. Thank you and God Bless You.

We have to remember that conservative Jews and Christians ware the hijab too. On the contrary, Islam liberated women and men in many ways. Islam gave the woman the right to divorce her husband if she could not live with him. Islam gave the husband the right to divorce his wife if he could not live with her. Divorce rights before Islam did not exist. Islam made it easy to live for both man and woman.
The issue of women rights is central issue in Islam where the mother role in the family is far more important than the husband.

No one is qualified to make assertions about facts regarding a religion (or any other topic) unless they have made a comprehensive study USING AUTHENTIC SOURCES. Would you want a child's appendix taken out by a surgeon who got his anatomical knowledge by looking at chatting with the guys down at the bar? Would you accept marital advice from someone who was opposed to the concept of marriage? Would you ride in an airplane piloted by someone who learned how to fly by reading old Deighton novels?
If anyone here is interested in the truth about women in Islam, why on Earth don't you read about it using authentic Islamic sources?
And if you refuse to go to authentic sources, what does that mean about your intentions?

It doesn't have to do so much with the clothing, as much as it does for how women are treated.
Women are treated like second-class citizens unable to care or think for themselves. The laws are extremely unfair to women in Muslim countries. And the part about 1 man marrying 4 women...so not okay. How is that considerate to any of those women, having to devot their lives to 1/4 of a man? There are so many injustices against Muslim women.
I have no problem with people dressing modestly, and I wish more people were considerate enough to cover-up.

Alot of broad questions. Anyone who knows human nature will distinquish between a person beliefs and their nature. Human nature is the same everywhere, some people are good some bad, the thing is to be as good as we can, and repent ,(turn away from) bad habits. East- West it doesn't matter what matters is the sin each on of us committ

No, I don't think that woman in Islam are oppressed.
The Burka is someones choice, they're not forced to wear it.
I believe that the same goes for the Hijab.

Maybe it is ignorance. I thought that you had to wear a hijab and a burka, I didn't realize it was optional and that you choose to wear them because you are modest. And since you are not oppressed then I guess you can have four husbands if you want. I mean if you are not oppressed then you are equal to men so that would be your option also, correct? Why don't the men of your culture wear hijab also to keep them away from the lustful eyes of the women? If all things are equal ?
