Oh God yes! It's perfectly fine and normal to not get drunk but still want to be with friends while they do. Don't let sobriety be an excuse to stay in, unless you'll feel tempted. If you feel the need to hide sobriety, get a club soda and lime (looks like a vodka and soda), or a Coke with lime. Bartenders will often give out free drinks if you say you're the DD. Any good bartender will be sly about it and not embarrass you in front of friends, and can make mocktails. Then just have fun! Some friends of mine say that you can even feel buzzed just by being around drunks without drinking.

I had my work Christmas "do" last night, and have to admit I was dreading it for the same reasons, I get drunk VERY quickly and have to really watch how many times my glass gets topped up. I found the best thing to do is have a glass of wine sitting in front of you, and along side it have a tall glass of water, drink loads of water and have the occasional sip of wine, use your wine to "toast" people and then put it down, it gives the illusion that you are drinking a lot more than you actually are. I had 2 full glasses of wine over the course of 6 hours, so was no where near drunk at that time. I actually had an amazing time as watching other people get drunker and drunker is very funny!! I think it is much wiser to stay sober, or certainly control the amount you drink, you can have fun and enjoy yourself without the worry that you may make a fool of yourself or become an unnecessary burden on your work colleagues.

Absolutely it's OK to stay sober.
So many people will wake up with a vile hangover and will have made idiots of themselves - you will feel great the next day and secure in the knowledge that your reputation is spotless. Your colleagues will be boring when they're p1ssed though - but if they misbehave, enjoy the spectacle. Have a good night.

If you are not going to drink, then why go out? You can sit at home and feel exactly the same. I guess the only reason your friends want you to come is to be their designated driver. The only reasoning I have is that when people who do not drink wake up, that is the best they are going to feel all day. When I wake up, I go through my day and have a few drinks that night. It definitely feels great to drink and I believe you should have a few drinks tonight. Don't repeat what you did last year but have a few and enjoy yourself.
Good times!!!

It is better to not drink with work folks. Often when people drink too much, they show who they really are. And if you are not drinking, you can get to see who the people you work with really are. Also, by not drinking, you will keep yourself from getting in trouble for doing something crazy. Lastly, you can be te designated driver to make sure everyone gets home alive. So lots of good things by not drinking.

Not only is it ok, it's preferable. Why people get deliberately drunk is something I will never understand. I usually have no more than two drinks & nurse each one for hours. I don't dare to get ones I like a lot.

Oh! Yes. You can party with the rest of them. I do. I drink sometimes but more not to drink that I do. I still have a good time. But I also have the personality where I laugh at just about everything. Have fun.

Absolutely. You don't have to get plotzed to fit in. Get the barkeep to mix you up a club soda or tonic water and lime in a highball glass. That way you've got something in your hand. Laugh and cut up with the group. Talk, enjoy yourself.
And when the rest of the soggy sods are trying to figure out how to get back to their flats, you'll be able to get there under your own power with your dignity intact.

I also don't drink now for the same reasons. Most people don't even notice you are not drinking, I would just say something like its easier if I drive or I'm on medication if your not comfortable with saying you don't drink. But to be honest its no one else's business but yours. xx

You are never obligated to drink. I only do it so I can pass out and not get depressed for being the only guy without a girl.
Man, when that is the case I drink until I pass out.
