The phonograph was one of the first instruments to record audio for posterity. We hear the actual person, not some transcriptionist's interpretation. We finally got to hear the tone--sarcastic, joking, serious, etc--which we could only imagine before. It's like the difference between photographs and paintings.

so what do you think music was played on and by whom before the phonograph? how were these things and people transported, accomdated, have to be fed etc. now, what di d the phonograph do for the human race? think,,,,,

You can use it to play records. Vinyl records. They sound way better than CDs. Also, it was the first method of recording sound, invented by Thomas Edison.
