It is because in this country we are taught that the Roman Catholic church is the pinnacle of Christianity. The person with the Grinch avatar should obviously educate himself before answering other people so smugly. Catholics are a form of Christianity, the followers of Christ (Christians) were around long before the Vatican and the inception of Catholicism. There are many different sects of Christianity because some people don't understand the meaning of the words in the Bible, some people use the Bible to make money, and some people didn't like what was in it and omitted some things from it. As a Christian it should not bother you if others choose to confuse your beliefs. If you give them the word of our Father and they choose not to believe it for whatever reason then it is their own fault. Simply put the answer to your question is that they are ignorant of the truth.

You do know about people who ASSuME don't you?
I was Catholic, Now I'm Christian. Catholics can be Christians but Christians are more often not Catholic. Denominations don't determine whether or not one is a Christian. Being a Christian is determined by your relationship with Jesus Christ.
God don't put up walls...People do!
i.e. That if you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead you will be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9-10

People also assume it in reverse. They think that just because Fundamentalist Christians behave in a certain way, then Catholics must share those same beliefs. They couldn't be more wrong. There is a world of difference between Fundamentalist and Catholic beliefs and practices.

Catholic means the universal church.....the body of Christ. So if we are Christians and are his body then we are Catholics. I'm anglican and I'm catholic in my beliefs. You might be meaning Roman Catholics
edit: to Abby C.....it's interesting the idea of why there are so many denominations out there......picture the church starting out in the area around Israel and the like and the Christian disciples wanted to spread the good news......some of them went far east and put Christianity in that culture and so developed the eastern orthodox church. Some went northward and the russian orthodox and greek orthodox churches happened. Some went westward towards rome and up through the british isles and you then got into roman catholicism and and variations of catholics and so you see each area developed its own style of worship....they were still using the bible and worshiping God, but each in their own diffrent way. Then as history went on some of the differences grew and you had the protestant movement and then you also had the puritans coming to the americas and the evangelical movement and the beginnings of the UPC church and stuff. It's a shame that we fight with our differences instead of growing together in our similarities. Are we not to worship one God and one Lord. no matter where I am if there is a bible in the church I will worship there. I'm Anglican but that's because it's the style I grew up in........first and foremost I'm a follower of Christ.

I would guess that more catholics have been shown on tv and movies in the past and they have a longer history. I live in a area with few catholics so I have never had that problem.

Christians are not Catholics. Complete opposites when it comes to specific beliefs, which are sharp divisions.

I haven't spent too much time studying the different denominations of Christianity because mostly what I've figured out is that they all read the same book, they all worship the same god, and they all believe in Jesus. To this day, I have no idea why they had to split into different denominations......so my answer is, I don't always jump to catholicism because I think all the denominations are the same.

Regardless... Living your life according to some overtly bias book written two thousand years ago, deserves a little ridicule.
