About 50% of my college professors are self-proclaimed atheists. What kinds of philosophical changes are brought about by the acquisition of advanced intellect?

Many scientists are atheists.

However, many artists, poets, writers, and musicians at least believe in God.

Would you try to tell me that scientists are smarter than artists? Of course not! They just have a different kind of intelligence.

What kind of philosophical changes are brought about by the acquisition of advanced intellect? It all depends on the person, and which assumptions they're already operating under.

question 1. This implies nothing about theists.
question 2. It is human nature to become arrogant (puffed up) by the tough that, i am more educated, smarter, better looking, etc, etc, etc than others.
Therefore it does say something about the professors.

If the "professors" you allude to were as intellectual as they think themselves, and not pre-disposed to prejudice towards Christianity they would realize there is a massive body of evidence out there pointing directly to the irrefutable (accept by fools) facts proving fulfillment of prophesy by Jesus Christ
Further that Christ was born of a knowen Virgin Developed a earthly ministry, in which He performed thousands of Miracles, Died on the Cross A totally innocent man, and on the third day arose from the dead. Followed by appearing to as many as 500 people, some of whom wishing He had never lived. All this information is available to those who look.
But than again History is something ignored, by the arrogant.

A link to help you. i truly hope that the professors have not destroyed your ability to think for yourself.
Marry Christmas.

I am a Christian, my IQ is pretty high, just a fact.... I am a stay at home mom, no college, nothing..... I choose to serve God, not man..... what has being or not being Christian have to do with an IQ?? I know many that have IQ's off the chart...... what is your point ?? Because Christians do NOT go around shouting on the roof tops , * Hey my IQ is higher than your IQ* does not mean we are as dumb or stupid as some think..... and as a Christian I must state this : the Bible does say that knowledge will increase and that will lead to destruction.... hmmmm...... makes me think.... How about you ?? go in peace...... God bless

I do know quite a few atheists who are professors. However, I also know several medical doctors, physicists, biologists, and other individuals in scientific and academic fields, all of whom hold postgraduate degrees, who are not just theists, but are very strong in their religious beliefs (some to the point of also being ordained clergy members). It's not necessarily accurate to suggest that disbelief in God (or deities in general) is an automatic indicator of intelligence. I've met some seriously stupid atheists. Fortunately, though, I've encountered (and befriended) quite a few extremely bright and gifted people from both sides.

Intellectuals believe in facts... To be religious you have to have some measure of faith in something that you cannot prove the existence of, I don't think it says anything about theists other than that they're willing to go the extra mile with some blind faith. Doesn't mean you can't have an intellectual be religious though, not at all.

I believe that theists are really settling for an explanation for their own existence, until we actually find a way to prove how the earth and how humans really came about. All science really has is theories, but they are based on fact.....but since they cannot be completely proven yet, theists will still have their stories.

Study history. Most of the academics through history have been theists or deists. The belief in God has absolutely no correlation with ones intelligence.

It implies nothing about theists. It perhaps implies something about the educational system.

I think the main difference is provisionalism versus certainty. Those from the perspective of certainty bifurcate their world into black and white, true and false, right and wrong. Provisionalists see many subtle shades of gray. There is no definite right and wrong that works in every case. This is why we grant judges certainly in hearing cases and issuing sentences.

Smart people realize how much they don't know, and are not afraid of doubt and uncertainty. In fact, science is built on uncertainty. That's why scientists and philosophers enjoy asking questions rather than assuming particular truths. And that takes intellectual courage.

Believers, on the other hand, only find comfort in faith. Faith is the antagonist of doubt, and also the opiate of those less interested in intellectual honesty.

Doubt is better.
