The ankle should be no problem if it's healed and you can use it normally. Technically police are on call 24/7 but you do have a life and days off. You really only get called in if something really bad happens. It does affect your social life and the lives of your spouse and children, but not enough to stay away from the job. If you are of a mind to be a police officer you might see if there is any kind of reserve force where you can ride with officers and see what it is really about. My father was a police officer and only drew his gun once and that was at a snake. He helped people everyday and felt good about doing his job.

It is a good career and you are not always on call. They say if something does happen near you, calling 911 is considered appropriate action. Possibly just if something huge (like a big political convention) comes up, they may cancel days off or something. It has a little stress at times, but many times you do nothing....can go write parking tickets, patrol, or what ever, or just do nothing. Has great benefits.

You are not always on call. There are certainly opportunities to go in for overtime, but they won't force you to answer your phone.

Your ankle will not be an issue as long as you can pass the physical agility test.

I'm not familiar with LAPD's retirement program, but as a general rule, you can retire earlier as a police officer compared to other professions.
