She is still crying even with the pain meds we were given. Any suggestions? It is the middle of the night, she is breathing ok, and fairly alert, but cries when she moves certain ways. Very sad.
She is also eating ice pretty well, and has went potty both ways, so all is ok in that area.

The pain killers wear off after a few hours. She is probably just feeling pain from the surgery. Has she jumped up on anything or anyone? That could cause some definite pain and damage!

Maybe you would both feel better if you gathered up some blankets and slept on the floor with her. She would feel comforted and would be less likely to move around, and you would feel better because you would be able to keep her happy.

Good luck!

If the vet recommended ice or a heat pad for comfort, use that.
Make sure there's no blood in the urine.
If she is a small dog, say under 8 pounds and was handled rough, she will be bruised for a few days.
It is important to note whether she continues to whizz without dribbling.
If she dribbles after a few weeks, there is a problem with the bladder.
I find in our area that some friends have dogs who become incontinent after being spayed.
It is because the vet injures the Bladder.
If your dog is still whining tomorrow at this time, call the following day for an apointment.
First see if the dog has an elevated temp because that is a sign of infection.

Honestly if it were me I would be a bit disconcerted if my pup was still whimpering in pain like that. Unless she was a kinna whiny girl who cried a lot before the spay, I would be upset enough about her crying to call up the vet and ask for some pain meds if possible. She could tough it out, but I see no reason not to take the edge off if your vet thinks it is appropriate. If I was in so much pain I was crying I would love it if somebody got me some Advil.

I don't have any reason enough to think you have anything medically wrong, but if she is in so much pain she is still vocalizing why not see if they can give you some painkillers? Some are so easy to give you just rub a cream into their ears, so you don't even need to give her a pill. Couldn't hurt to ask your vet, and if she keeps you up all night why not make a trip to a 24hr vet to get some meds if you are up anyways, if it is not to far of course. It may just make you feel better to ask a vet if she is ok... even if he doesn't recommend any pain meds or doesn't see any reason to bring her in, it may put your mind at ease to hear him say so.

If she is still in pain by the morning and crying I would give a ring to the vet's for sure though, just to be safe. I have had many dogs of all ages and breeds spayed while in my care, cats too, none of them were crying like that afterwards, and many times I was sent home with painkillers I could use at my discretion IF they were needed only. Sometimes I used them, sometimes not.

Hope you both get some sleep and that your girl is better soon :)

Sending a pet home without pain reliever has definitely been the standard practice of many/most vets, at least until the last year or two (and I'd say it's still suitable for some animals with high pain thresholds who won't stay quiet otherwise). However, routine as it is, spaying is still serious abdominal surgery, and the newest thinking supports giving pain meds afterward (especially if they're a bit sedating). I have never done it with my pets in the past, but I gave my dog pain meds after his neutering, and that is a substantially less invasive operation than a spay, so I would ask for analgesics if this were my dog, especially if you are able to keep her suitably quiet (remember to reduce her food intake appropriately to account for her reduced activity).

Because of her age, the vet couldn't give her anything real strong. She is tender and will be for a few days probably.Try to get her to lay still. Don't do anything different then what your vet said though.I know a girl doubled her cats medicine because she thought if 1 pill will help, 2 will help more. She almost killed her cat. Some dogs just don't take pain as well as others. Just like people. Sounds like she is doing OK otherwise.

Poor baby i feel so bad when they cry like that. there's not much u can do but just try and comfort her. make sure she doesn't jump on the bed or couch or anything. when my dog's got spayed/neutered i kept them in a room where there wasn't any place to jump up or down..just layed pillows and blankets for them on the floor. i also made sure everything around was clean and sanitary so they wouldn't get infection. just try to keep comforting her though that's all u can really do if she already has meds.

It's normal for her not to have an appetite on the day of the surgery. Make sure she gets some food tomorrow, though- small dogs are prone to hypoglycemia if they don't get some food everyday.

She has gone through a very trying experience and Understand her pain...If she continues this for more than 2 or 3 days, take her back to the vet. Her stiches may be too tight, etc...

On the other hand, you may have pampered this dog too much. Not trying tro be cruel, but Imo she will be fine. And in the future you MUST treat her like a dog . Not your baby.

She shouldn't be crying at all. You should call the vet and tell him. 6 mos old dogs recover very quickly and she should be calm and quiet, not jumping up on things.. But she should not be crying.

She's probably just in discomfort from the surgery. When I spayed my cat, she was terrible uncomfortable.
