My poor car was smashed by a van yesterday and my insurance company will pay $20 dollars a day for a rental car.

I heard somewhere that rental car places give insurance companies discounts on their rental cars.....i dont know.

Do you think $20 will cover a midsize car????
My family is too big for a compact car and im just trying to figure out how much more im going to have to pay if anything when i get the car tomorrow.

Thanks in Advance!

It is sad that your insurance company does not give you a fair rental price when you pay for that feature in your policy.

Try going to www.rentawreck.com/ and see if they have a place near you. Since they do not buy new cars, the rental charges are far less and you will be able to get a car that accommodates you.

I would also call my insurance agent and ask them how they expect you to get a car for $20. They may have a place that gives them a special discount. But I would expect and Aveo or the like for that price.

It'll probably be a subcompact car. Same thing happened to us and we were stuck with a ford focus or something like that. It could seat 4 but it was a very tight fit.

For us the whole mess dragged on for months while they fixed it. When we got our car back finally it had a bunch of problems, we took it in again, they did more work, but there were still problems. In the end we had to sell it. The insurance company should have totalled it.

Is the damage bad? If it is I would recommend you try to get your insurance company to total it so you can just get a new car and soon. Yer insurance co should let you choose who does the work. Say you want the dealer to do it. The dealer will bid high, which might convince the ins co to total it out.

You will probably get only a compact vehicle. The insurance company only owes you basic transportation (to get from point A to point B.)

If you want a larger rental, you will have to pay out of pocket.

If the insurance company is allowing 20 per day - that is because 1. only 20 per day is built into the policy and you did not choose to take out the additional coverage that would have increased the limit. or 2. The coverage amount that you purchased is only 20 per day.

The insurance company does not expect 20 per day to cover all your costs. 20 per day just helps to defray some of the costs.

If you wanted all your costs covered you should have purchased a higher per day limit. In my area 30 per day and 50 per day are available - but the premium is higher.

So....before folks go bashing on the mean ol' insurance company whose just picking on the little guy---- -- Let me clear something up.

20 per day is apparently the coverage amount she purchased or was automatically provided by the policy- and she chose not to take out additional coverage. So the insurance company can't do more. The insurance company is bound by the coverage you purchased and paid for.

The discounted prices I get on cars from Hertz and Enterprise run about:

A mid-sized car will run about 25-27 per day plus tax.

You can get an economy car for about 19.99 plus tax.

Most likely you will have to put the 20 per day toward a car and pay the balance per day out of pocket. Depending on the type of car you chose to get -it could be 5-10 per day.

Also - in most cases -you do not have to take out the additional insurance that the rental company sales. Your collision/comprehensive and liability should protect the rental car. (the collision damage waivers run about 12- - 14 per day) so that can save you some money right there.

$20 might get you a sub-sub-compact.

Budget wants $23/day (plus taxes) for a Chevy Aveo
