Without religion, or belief of God, we wouldn't be peaceful at all! We would still fight over dumb things such as oil, land, money, and power (like we are doing now).

Why do people seem to think wars would cease without religion? What's going on in the middle east may SEEM to be about muslims and jews, but it's really only about two things. Land and power. The religious aspects are merely an excuse, if Judaism and Islam ended tomorrow, they'd come up with a whole new set of reasons to fight by the next day. Let's stop being silly and pretending they wouldn't.

Same with the inquisition and the crusades. Absolutely nothing to do with "god's will." One was about land and wealth, and the other about internal purging for political and financial gains. Even the Catholic church today is really nothing more than the largest, wealthiest corporation in the world. Just because someone says their doing something for "god" doesn't make it so.

Religion isn't the problem. It's the people who abuse the faith of others for their own ends that need to be stopped. I'm not overly religious myself, but for the most part the best, most caring, and happiest people I've ever met have been very strong in their beliefs.

If you're asking about a world without the corrupt groups the pass themselves off as ORGANIZED RELIGION, then maybe that would be something to look into, but for the most part I wouldn't want to live in a world without individual faith.

Without religion, or without Christianity? Religion has been the driving force for mankind since the beginning of the world. It is what gives man his purpose. It has also been what either held him back, or pushed him forward technologically. Those who practiced pagan religions, and were enveloped in pagan superstitions, would not allow themselves to develop certain inventions because it might 'anger the gods'. Look at India. Their religion prohibits the killing of cows, because it might be someone's grandmother. And so, millions are starving, while food walks freely through the streets. For them, the absence of their religion might actually improve their lifestyle.
But the world without Christianity- would be chaos and disaster. We would be like the world before the time of Christ- militant, superstitious, dictators and emperors who ruled with an iron fist. We see that in countries where Christ is not allowed, like the Sudan, that the people are in extreme poverty and extreme bondage. This is exactly what would happen to the world. Christianity allows freedom of other religions. Religions like Islam do not allow freedom of other religions- they force all to conform to their beliefs. Thus, it is a system of bondage and slavery. Without Christianity, the whole world would most likely become like the early Roman empire, or like many Arab nations. The strong survive, and control the poor and weak. Morality would no longer exist. Without a moral lawgiver, there is no law, and everyone would do what is right in his own eyes. Those who want to shoot innocents would have no reason to not do so- without a fear of God, or fear of eternal consequences, have nothing to hold them back. A world without Christianity would be hell on earth.

Seems to be a repeat, or a variation of a question that come up every day or so.

My answer is much the same. Some people need a religion, they need that fear of what will happen to them if they are naughty. Otherwise there would be anarchy.
Being an atheist means taking a personal responsibilty for their actions, and not everyone has the moral fibre or strength to do that. A thinking, caring atheist doesn't need a book or a religion to tell them how to behave.

A world without religion? Who could there be such a thing. God made the earth everything and everyone on it and the religion that so many of us are able to have today. even though i do understand were everyone else is comeing from, the world would not how ever be a better place. in all reality there would not be a world. Without religion there is no God and without a God there is no earth.

If we got rid of some of the most morally bankrupt religions, we'd be alot better off and it would probably offset getting rid of the good religions.

If the Bible and the Koran were to stop being presented as fact, we wouldn't be living through a re-enactment of the Crusades right now (and the Christians in the US are just much at fault as the Muslims in the Middle East for the current war). Presumably, alot of women would be freed from a religion that advocates enslaving them and gays would finally have equal rights. Scientific progress would also no longer have to face opposition from religious fanatics and crazy people would no longer take the Bible literally and decide to stone their disobedient children.

However, this would also make alot of people unhappy and would eliminate many religions which do not promote hate. This would also mean that many people would be without needed moral guidance.

Personally, I'd prefer to see the elimination of all hate religions. I'd like to see religious texts edited to remove all verses which can lead to bad actions. We don't need to get rid of all religion. We just need to rid ourselves of some of the religions which advocate immoral activities.

Note: And 99.9999% of The World's Population Will Go To Hell.

I'm seeing a few ignorant answers such as: "Chaos and Destruction." In a world with no god there is no reason to believe that we could not have just laws and normalcy. An Atheist has just as high (or even higher) morals than theists. We are not anarchists, baby killers, or Satan worshipers...We are people just like you Christians, we just don't have your naive ideologies and religious taboo.

Great! It is suppose to be about relationship not religion anyway. So do away with all the religion, just as long as we get to keep the relationship.

But what is religion? Isn't is a creed, a belief system? It does not need to be God centered, it can be human centered, natured centered, and keeping this in mind how could you ever get rid of 'religion' because it would exist even if you did not use the word.

We could reach a compromise -- what if we, like, keep the intent of the 10 commandments but get rid of all the phantasma like virgin births, resurrection, devils and angels and all that crap. Maybe then we could do something. What about it religious people?
